Here's my question...Why have I never seen speckled trout

May 21, 2019, 1:05 PM

in a restaurant? I sweatergawd I could survive off of it, and I just discovered it last week. Probably the best fish I've ever eaten, but cannot ever recall seeing it on a menu, as a special, anything...

Might be hard to raise?

May 21, 2019, 1:10 PM

Unless its a fresh catch kind of place that gets them in locally, they might be too hard to raise in enough quantities to make it worthwhile.

Maybe?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You ever fish for them?***

May 21, 2019, 1:16 PM

Not on purpose :)

May 21, 2019, 1:21 PM

I caught one once by accident, but that's how I catch any fish I catch.

I know my neighbor who fly fishes a lot has caught a few around here.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if you are actually looking to fish for them

May 21, 2019, 2:22 PM [ in reply to You ever fish for them?*** ]

better in the fall
DOA shrimp
look for places with visible water currents
if you are in a spot for a bit and don't catch, move on to the next spot

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i don't know the exact reason, but i have a guess

May 21, 2019, 1:11 PM [ in reply to Here's my question...Why have I never seen speckled trout ]

the trout population is devastated during cold winters.

i'd imagine the commercial harvest is not allowed so as not to eliminate the population entirely.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I could see that, but even in Florida I've never seen it

May 21, 2019, 1:15 PM

Seems like some of the hole in the wall places would have it, but who knows.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They are dang good...caught some in Chas. in-shore...

May 21, 2019, 1:27 PM [ in reply to Here's my question...Why have I never seen speckled trout ]

last year.

Took them back to sister-in-law's house and fried up some for fish tacos and pan seared some. Was really good. Said basically the same thing as you did about not seeing them in restaurants ever...not even the smaller fresh to table places that serve whatever is available/in-season.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, Captain D's is a fine establishment. Wish I had one

May 21, 2019, 1:05 PM

near me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nice.

May 21, 2019, 2:18 PM

I hate we don't have a Captain D's around here.

Dood...

May 21, 2019, 5:49 PM

You’re making Hyman’s jealous with those skrimpz.

Be sure you go by there to get a real taste of Charleston’s finest.

I’ve been there once and it was with some out of town folks that wanted to go. I honestly don’t remember if it was good or not. I know a lot of people will knock it but I think gilligans has good fried shrimp. I used to like Mimi’s Cafe on harbrview. Haven’t been to what it is now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hymans isn’t terrible

May 21, 2019, 6:22 PM

They made their name a long time go, then decided to market everything & well merchandise & the food quality suffered greatly. But it’s the typical fried seafood of a lot of places. Nothing that will make Jake Bentley say “Never again” but nothing that would bring you back to it. It’s almost strictly a visitor restaurant. Very similar to Bubba Gump, but older.
