The BEST way to rank teams

I'll toss this out there and take your comments off air:
I hate all the rhetoric back and forth about why someone should be ranked higher than someone else. So, to alleviate those asinine conversations:
What if the 13 member committee consisted of former great players, coaches and officials. A new panel every year. They would only submit ONE ranking list, after the conference championships have been played. No weekly rankings.
They would each submit ONE end-of-season list of their top 20 teams based on one, and only one criteria; do you believe each team can beat any team ranked behind them. That's it.
The criteria each member uses can be whatever they choose. They just need to believe that team 1 could beat every team behind them. Team 5 could beat every team behind them, and so on. Then, a computer (or anyone with math skills) would combine their final lists to create a consensus top 20, and that's the list we live with.
In the end, all the metrics and every poll are being manipulated to fit an opinion, so why not skip straight to the opinions and be done with all the headaches? Thoughts?

One major issue with your proposal.
All former great players and coaches are heavily biased to a specific team, and more often than not they are biased to their region as well.
You would likely have a great difference in opinion from the various players and coaches assembled.

Not sure that matters. There is no such thing as an unbiased person.

That's true but there are certainly varying levels of bias.
I would think especially former players would be very high on that list.

Ranking anything using opinion where facts are available is nonsensical. The 120 teams playing 12 games per year makes it difficult to prioritize facts in college football yet 2 things hold true. Every team has a W/L record and 10 conferences name champions at the end of the season. In the absence of better data those should be used to eliminate as much opinion as possible. I don't care what anyone on the committee thinks and if that is how they are making decisions in this system then the system should be changed. If anyone really cared about determining the best team, not best way to make profit, we wouldn't need a committee.

https://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/ Computers 1 - Ohio State 2 - Clemson 3 - Alabama 4 - LSU 5 - Georgia
AP 1 - LSU 2 - Ohio State 3 - Clemson 4 - Georgia 5 - Alabama
The same 5 teams are in the top 5 using eye test vs using data. The only difference in terms of CFP is Georgia would be left out. But they will have their shot against LSU, so who cares.

Would result in reduced clicks, magazine sales, ticket sales, jobs for writers, marketers, etc.
When you remove the hype, the money dries up.

That's still based on perception and perception is a nice cover for bias.
