The "Mighty SEC"

Jan 3, 2013, 8:26 AM

The SEC is so "dominant". They are 3-3 in bowl games so far. That includes losses to Northwestern and Louisville. That's not to mention South Carolina needed a miracle to beat Michigan, and NCSU outgained Vandy 424 to 225 in yards.

I'll be pulling for Oklahoma like nobody's business tonight. And Pitt against Ole Miss. And Notre Dame against Bama.

I love how everybody talks about how good SEC defenses are. Umm, let's look at the numbers.

Vandy gave up 424 yards to NCSU, LSU gave up 445 to Clemson, Mississippi State gave up 357 to Northwestern, South Carolina gave up 355 to Michigan, Georgia gave up 443 to Nebraska, and Florida gave up 336 to Louisville.

Now let's compare that to some of the offensive outputs by the SEC against non-SEC defenses:

Vandy put up 225 yards against NCSU, LSU put up 219 against Clemson, Mississippi State put up 292 against Northwestern, and Florida put up 286 against Louisville. None of these teams have great defenses but the sorry SEC offenses sure made them look pretty dang good!

So are SEC defenses really that good? Or are SEC offenses really that bad? The numbers pretty much tell the story.

Well according to the latest ESecPN spin the SEC is only

interested in playing in the NC game...so minimum effort is given for the other lowly bowl games.

Go Oklahoma!
Go Pitt!
Go ND!

No kidding. Have they forgotten that...

much of the "SEC domination" theory came from results of bowl games over the years!? Now all of a sudden bowl games don't matter? Huh?

That's why we lost to West Virginia last year. We knew we weren't playing for the National Championship, so why get all worked up trying to be a bunch of hillbilly's? Yet we've had to endure twelve months of endless berating because "what happens in the bowl games reveals the state of the program." How quickly hypocrisy devolves to lunacy when the "Mighty SEC" is on the losing end. Go (Clemson) Tigers!

various bowl committees. If Joe Sports public begins thining the SEC team is no going to try, who will want to watch?
