Grady Jarrett shoved in the back on that long Auburn TD pass

Sep 4, 2012, 10:45 AM

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere yet.

I was just watching the replay of the long Auburn TD pass, and I noticed that Jarrett made a nice swim move to get past the OL, but looks to have been blatantly shoved in the back giving Frazier the opportunity to get that pass off.

Did anyone else catch this as well? Or is that a legal block that I'm unaware of?

Yeah I was yelling for a call on that one. Our secondary was really out of position but that was a missed call on the line.

No doubt we were out of position but...

...if Jarrett doesn't hit the turf I'm pretty sure the pressure applied would have made it tough to put that long toss on target.

The ref didn't see it because he was too busy drooling over how tall Logan Thomas was.

Man, he must really have the hots for Thomas if he was drooling over him while reffing the Clemson/Auburn game.....

Pretty sure you are allowed to block someone's back at the line of scrimmage (5 yrds). Otherwise, just do spin moves the whole game so that they have to stop blocking you while your back is turn to the OL.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Correct. There is no block in the back penalty at the LOS.

Sep 4, 2012, 11:11 AM

You can't hold, but you can block 'em any way you can.

week were making sure players left the game after their helmets were ripped off. Sure they made a couple of illegal motion calls, especially when they nullified large gains, but calls against offensive linemen were not high on the list of calls to make. Heck, they even ignored several illegal procedure calls and at times just converted those to defensive offsides calls.

It is legal to block in the back

Sep 4, 2012, 11:01 AM

If the player doing the blocking was on the LOS at the snap and never left the 'blocking zone' and the ball is behind the LOS an between the tackles.

Heard something similar regarding blocking at LOS***

From NCAA rulebook

Sep 4, 2012, 11:12 AM [ in reply to It is legal to block in the back ]

From page FR-91 of 2012 rulebook.

From exceptions to block in the back:

Offensive players who are on the line of scrimmage at the snap within the blocking zone (Rule 2-3-6) may legally block in the back in the blocking zone, subject to the following restrictions:
(a) A player on the line of scrimmage within this blocking zone may not leave the zone and return and legally block in the back.
(b) The blocking zone disintegrates when the ball leaves the zone (Rule 2-3-6).

Re: It is legal to block in the back

Blocking in the back is allowed. There was at least one play where the OL tackled Beasley. And I don't mean he shoved him in the back. I mean he flat out jumped on him from behind to keep him from getting on the QB.

Thanks for the clarification...

...I am definitely ignorant when it comes to some of the finer rules of the game.
