Dont know if anyone else noticed but the speed of the ball from snap to to the time it reached the quarterback was very slow...it needs more speed....fraction of a second is all that is needed to make a play work....

Agreed. Some snaps were high. Every fraction of a second counts.

You know what would improve the screen plays this year? Mixing something else in with them!

Most teams use the screen route to take advantage of/slow down an over aggressive defense. We use it as our primary passing play.

It worked when we had two future pro bowl WRs lined up on the field. Our guys are great but they aren't magicians. They need a little surprise to make something out of nothing. Adjust your offense!

... also, the wheel route should be banned entirely for at least three years.

Re: Oh, for goodness sakes...

It also depends on the qb too. There was a really good discussion I heard before the bama game and the coaches were discussing the speed that kb and hurts got the ball to the perimeter and the placement as well. Both stated that kb and hurts were a little slow and less accurate placement than a DW4 was, or is.

Explained how that didn’t matter with most teams that both played all year but when you get D’s like we have and bama has etc, it’s not that effective.

That’s why I hope hj or tl win the job because they have the delivery to make it happen... and then watch out, our running backs will explode then.

Most of our fans believe that when we mention another QB behind center, that we are beating up on KB and have that back up QB is better thing, but I don't think that is the case when our starting QB has glaring problems at completing down field passes with any kind of accuracy, and will over throw short range receivers, or he will take off running before giving himself a chance to find an open receiver. Bama saw that, and they knew exactly how to shut KB completely down like they did. Flame away bc there are times that the truth is to much to handle when the player is someone we all like and care about. And I absolutely believe that KB would be doing himself a great favor if he ask to change positions before it's to late for a FB career after Clemson....

We all know the offense was somewhat handcuffed

Mar 3, 2018, 1:40 PM [ in reply to Oh, for goodness sakes... ]

last year with KB as our QB. He made few mistakes, but that’s because he didn’t take many risks. Bottom line, he couldn’t get the ball to our guys down the field.

Why didn’t the screens work? Is it because of our OL? Not being able to get out and make blocks? I wouldn’t be surprised. Our QB didn’t have much time to throw against stronger teams. Very disappointing, considering OL was supposed to be a strength last year.

I just hope to see some semblance of a downfield passing game and passing to the TE this season.

Basically the same O Line that DW4 had but with more experience!!!

Yea replacing the center is no big deal.

Mar 4, 2018, 10:50 PM [ in reply to We all know the offense was somewhat handcuffed ]

It's certainly harder for an OL to pass block when the defense is loading up the box and daring the offense to throw it deep. A lot of it also depends on the QB. There were countless plays last season when we had a receiver running open down the field, but KB failed to see him, and ended up taking a sack or running for a short gain. There were also countless plays where KB had a pocket of protection, but ended up spinning out of the pocket and right into the arms of a defender.

fix our screen defense

Mar 3, 2018, 1:50 PM

Against Alabama all they did was run receiver screens for 2 downs then use tempo for a quick snap on 3rd and 1 and got it practically everytime. We need to adjust to the horizontal defense game. But, we got time I do have high expectations mainly because all of the players are so experienced. Good luck!

improve our screen game? LMAO

Re: improve our screen game? LMAO

Mar 3, 2018, 4:03 PM

Hopefully that it don't get lost in all the bickering about our QB, we have very talented receivers that want to play in the NFL also, and they want to be drafted as early as possible. We need a QB, and I don't really care who it is as long as they help our receivers to look as good as they are by getting the ball in their hands 99% of the time that the play is suppose to go to them!!!

All we used to run was receiver screens but, you're right we won the championship by ditching our old playbook of screens. Let's go back to what worked if we want to win.

MID AND DEEP BALL PASSING GAME AMEN.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looks like the QB competition is over folks.

Mar 3, 2018, 6:47 PM

KB has already earned the right to come out first even though they haven't played a snap and even though he couldn't score a TD against Alabama. I hear the same stupid juvenile coach talking points

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Fast Tempo is just another way to screen out the young QBs

Mar 3, 2018, 6:51 PM

Remember Dabo said "Everything Counts"?

He's not playing anyone except KB and he knows it.

This will be our last year with a great DL.

The reason we won the ACC last year. Now we need a QB and not KB.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You delusional COOT

Mar 3, 2018, 6:58 PM

Your rants are hilarious especially when we all know that the only reason you do this is because Dabo and Clemson have hurt your feelings by curb stomping your chickens and winning championships. Lol @ you and your sorry chickens dude??????

Mar 3, 2018, 8:05 PM

I hope Kelly improves in the downfield passing game. It’s not a dislike but we have play the quarterback who can throw the ball downfield to the wide receivers. We are not a power running team like Alabama.

Re: New Story: Increased tempo, freshman standouts mark early Clemson spring efforts

Just Like we will always have a sturdy D, Bama will always have a sturdy defense also, and if you can't find a way to get the ball down field in chunks, PUT an L beside the score!!!

Re: New Story: Increased tempo, freshman standouts mark early Clemson spring efforts

Mar 4, 2018, 5:43 AM

I'm glad tempo is being stressed early cause it's something that will happen if practiced. I don't buy the argument that youth contributed to a slower tempo; if you practice an up-tempo game, it happens. So play calling and practice matter more than the snap count imo. Three years ago we had a much higher tempo than last year despite a younger team.

We have a great team in the making this year. I hope us fans can let it develop and let our coaches do their job. What a novel idea!

Re: New Story: Increased tempo, freshman standouts mark early Clemson spring efforts

Mar 4, 2018, 8:57 AM

The biggest problems with our passing game was that recievers didn’t step up and pass protection from the RBs was poor. You can’t go deep if you can’t pick up the blitz and you can’t run tempo if you keep dropping the ball. The coaches recognize this as a problem and are focusing on fixing it in spring practice.

Instead, we ran the ball, ate clock and let the defense win it. This is exactly what Jalen Hurts does for Alabama and pretty much how UGA runs their offense as well.

If we’d gone tempo, TNET would be complaining that we weren’t feeding Feaster and Etienne enough.

QB? We have four good options, all of whom would start at the majority of Power 5 schools. Most teams would kill for KB2, and he may be the 4th best QB we have. The staff is not worried about the QB position.

Re: New Story: Increased tempo, freshman standouts mark early Clemson spring efforts

Mar 4, 2018, 9:42 AM

OMG, yes, and the RBs didn't get more yards bc the QB didn't block for them after he hands them the ball ;) ;) :)

RB pass protection

Mar 4, 2018, 10:38 PM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Increased tempo, freshman standouts mark early Clemson spring efforts ]

It shows KB hasn't been watching much tape during his free time because if he did he could pick up the blitzes better that DW. IMHO DW wouldn't have been half the QB if he didn't put in the massive amount of work he did. RB can only pick up blitzes if the QB points them out to them or changes up pass protection

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The common thread here is that our blocking was awful.

Mar 4, 2018, 3:41 PM

Screen passes didn't work because our receivers couldn't make the necessary blocks to create space to catch and run.
Downfield passes didn't work well because or linemen and running backs couldn't make the necessary blocks to give our QB time to throw downfield.
It is hard to push the tempo when your offensive line is tired and not blocking well.

Our pathetic blocking was exposed against a fast, athletic defense like Alabama's. It was pretty sad. I'm glad our coaches are working hard to fix these issues, rather than patting themselves on the back and being complacent because we made the playoffs.

OCs need to change

Mar 4, 2018, 7:01 PM

Our play calling and game plans are lacking in getting the most out of our talent. If we really had OCs we would have an unbelievable team. Keep the defense guessing and prey on the opposing teams weakness. Not so predictable!
