Feb 23, 2013, 12:56 PM

What would it take for the State to put a law school in Clemson... Seems that could be a use of the 1 billion Clemson University is raising

SC does not need another law school

Feb 23, 2013, 1:02 PM

There are not enough jobs for the lawyers coming out of USC and Charleston.

I can understand that point but when the economy improves there will be more jobs and more demand

Re: SC does not need another law school

Feb 23, 2013, 1:24 PM

I think the number of lawyers who are unemployed or underemployed is probably even greater than the regular folks.

At my old company, I worked with a girl who had a law degree but had to take a writing job --- $30k a year with $150k education.

I know that's an anecdotal example, but one of the reasons I decide to go the MBA route instead of JD was because of this very problem.

Yeah but wouldnt the demand for lawyers increase when the economy improves

Two law schools in SC is enough - more than enough

Feb 23, 2013, 7:21 PM

Even in a good economy. One is probably enough.

I worked for a law firm in the 90s and at that time South Carolina had more lawyers per capita than any other state. I had no legal training and was paid more than the first year attorneys.

Never happen...

Feb 23, 2013, 1:15 PM

Clemson not gonna spend 90 mill (like South Carolina) to build a law school in addition to all of the operating expense when there would be no demand for the graduates. Charleston Law adding to much supply for the state as it is.

Re: Never happen...

Feb 23, 2013, 1:19 PM

Charleston Law is a newly ABA accredited school ..... I can see why we dont have a law school because our history is in A&M while UsuC background is in the Liberal Arts... But I see Clemson evolving into a university like Cornell

USuC legislators blocked Harry Lightsey and Alex Sanders

Feb 23, 2013, 1:59 PM

From starting a law school at College of Charleston. Sanders went ahead and started a proprietary private law school in Charleston and has installed his former provost at CofC as Dean. USuC is absolutely paranoid that Sanders will try to sell the school to CofC. If that ever happens and you can go to law school in Charleston for the cost of instate tuition, USuC can go ahead and close their law school.

Re: Law school

The fund raising campaign isn't for money to spend directly. It's to build the endowment which isn't halfway there yet. You spend earnings from the endowment but want to spend at a lower rate than it earns so that it grows even when contributions drop.

We don't need a medical school or a law school. Need to keep improving the strengths that are already there, including partnerships with MUSC that are already in place. What would be good is a joint MD/PhD between MUSC and Clemson's BioE and EE departments.
