National Championship Visualized

I don't post very often, but I wanted to share something I've been working on. I wanted to create something that would allow fans to see every play of the National Championship game, search for specific players, and click on any play to see the actual footage.

I've created this tool for that purpose: http://tabsoft.co/2jcmCM9

Hover over any play to see details, click on any play to see the actual footage, or use the highlight search to find the playmaker in the game.

Thanks, glad you like it! It was definitely a labor of love to create the play by play data and link it to the game. Although it wasn't so bad watching that awesome win over and over though!

And we get access to it for free ! ! !

How long did it take you to compile all of this ?

It took several nights of working on it. Building out the play by play data and then linking it with youtube took the longest. I wanted to get it out sooner, but I was exhausted last week after coming back from the game.

Incredible!!! A sincere thanks!***

Very, very cool.

Very curious how you made this. I'm a software developer. I'm not familiar with Tableau but that looks to be the primary tool involved, no? I can't imagine they had a pre-made football play-by-play visualization, so you must have put this particular visual together from some kind of generalized building blocks right?

Regardless, very, very cool man. I'm super impressed. Not only is a cool visual on it's own, but the interactivity pushes it over the top.

Please consider posting this to the College Football subreddit (reddit.com/r/cfb). Those guys over there would love this.

Thanks! My coworker actually posted it to /r/cfb https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/5owtr8/a_play_by_play_vizualization_of_the_national/

Yes, this was created using Tableau. I created it by building out the data in a way that allows Tableau to plot two points and connect them. So for each play in the game, there is a play number, quarter, time, and path of 0 or 1. That allows it to plot the points and connect them.

As a fledgling software developer, this gives me ideas and

inspiration. Thanks! Gonna look up Tableau and see what makes it tick. Thanks and excellent work!

Have you thought about changing directional arrows based on lost yardage or penalties?

Re: Very impressive

Posted: Jan 19, 2017 10:23 AM

That's a good point. I think traditionally "drive charts" show the arrow for the way the team is going regardless of whether they gained or lost yardage, so that's why I did that.

A post that has purpose. .well done***

Haha I wish. It was very labor intensive to build it out. Maybe I can figure out a way to automate some of it.
