Anybody think Billy Napier could be next Gamecock coach?

Billy Napier clearly wasn't ready for the OC gig at Clemson. You hear the nightmare stories - a guy too young and too out of his depth, an upjumped I-form guy from Furman who printed his first playbook at Clemson on five different colors of paper in five different fonts.
It worked about as well as you'd expect; Dabo of necessity jettisoned him and brought in The Chad, and Clemson never looked back. But as ever Fate is twisty and full of surprises; Napier - who was always a relentless recruiter up there with Dabo as a closer - was one of the many coaches who went through the Nick Saban Coaching Rehab Treatment at Bama, and then followed that up by landing the head man's gig at Louisiana. He's jettisoned that old I-form offense (and probably the Crayola playbook) and has gone Full Clemson; the Ragin' Cajuns now run a spread tempo-based HUNH just like the school he was fired from and hey, he's got Louisiana up to 7-2 and their only losses were a 38-28 loss to Mississippi State and a 17-7 loss to App State.
He knows the state, he knows the SEC, and he's a heckuva recruiter...and he undoubtedly has a grudge against Dabo; getting fired does that to you.
I suspect if Muschamp doesn't make a bowl game and is persuaded to step down - which I'm hearing strong rumbles could well happen, especially with A&M and Clemson upcoming - Napier could be one of the first phone calls South Carolina would make.
Let's see how smart I am. But I definitely could see it happening.

I agree he would be one of their first calls. He got promoted too quickly at Clemson. If only he could’ve been retained to recruit and work under a veteran offensive coordinator things would’ve worked out better for him here. Given that we have two national championships and four playoff appearances running, I cannot say that I would have wanted things to work out any differently for Clemson.

And if you think Napier could be the next SCAR coach, then who am I to disagree. Definitely a well reasoned argument you laid out.

There are many places he could go that would be much easier to turn around. I cant imagine competing with Dabo and the monster he has built at Clemson.

He was once a hot name but cooled. He was La Tech super under the radar at 8-1

Gamecoots won't pay the buyout ransom. They are stuck with MusCoot for at least 1 more year.
That is good news for us, as their recruiting will suffer.
PS: Gamecoots want/need new AD first.

Grudge?
Has Napier openly stated or hinted to sour grapes about being fired?
As you and others have already stated, he definitely took on more than he could chew - but I want to hear more of these stories about Napier!
LOL I've been following this board regularly since 2010-2011ish and I don't remember reading any Billy Napier rumors/stories like that.

I think the coots will have a list similar to FSU. They don't have much chance if nothing most of these coaches, but that's where they'll start.

Love your Tiger insights Q … Napier has really upped his game. Still think SC would seek a bigger splash like Leach, Petrino, Strong or Norvell. Leach would be a step up and an interesting sidekick for crazy Frank Martin.

Napier and SC

Hiring Napier would not be the sort of quick fix, name guy hire the gamecocks often make. I don't know if it would work.
Best case for SC would be for the General to be calling the shots. The expected thing would be that Tanner goes first, then the new AD makes the move. But Tanner has pulled a lot of pitchers off the mound. He might be willing to make such a move.
Darla could write Muschamp's check. That would certainly make the right thing easier to do. If they canned Boom and hired a young hungry guy with the it factor, it would represent a strong step into the future. And a good young coach could win big among the old guard coaches who mostly have names we know, a lot of battle scars and not much going for them.
Is Napier the one? I don't know.

That’s all you can ask from someone. I hope he doesn’t go to Usuc because I like him a lot.

It wouldn't be the worst hire they could make. Question is,

would Napier want to compete with Clemson, UGA, UNC, FSU, and FL for players, because that's what he's going to have to do at SCar. Not sure I'm sold on him being butthurt about Dabo, either. He might be but is he cocky enough to think he can beat Dabo? Bring it on, says I.
