Liberty High School (or Pickens, can't remember). I heard about it on the radio yesterday. The cool thing was the rousing applause from the audience afterwards.

The fact that he stood up for his beliefs. I am not even that religious but I think groups like the ACLU are disgusting.

Would you feel the same if he read from the Koran?

That would demonstrate even more bravery, what with so few Muslims in the country. Right?

I would be fine with it. Like I said I am not religous. The kid worked his ### off to earn the honor to speak in front of his classmates. He shouldnt have to change his message to fit the mold of some organization.

One more---what about if he tore up his speech, and made a brief comment rejecting interracial marriage? Would that also be brave, in your view?

Wow... So now we are going from a message of religion to a message of hate. One of these is not like the other. You are REACHING.

I'm asking because everyone seems to consider it a "brave" act to stand up for his beliefs. And in this case, those beliefs just so happen to coincide with 75% of the country (more here, in the south).
Personally, I don't see it as brave at all. I'm glad he has strong convictions, and I too think it was appropriate. I just wouldn't call it "brave" because it falls so easily inside the norm for our culture.

The Muslim prayer wouldn't be popular in the US....
Fact is you went from that to a message of hate to try and STREEEEETTTCCCCHHH to a point. The fact that you tried to compare those two just made you look foolish.

here's what you said,
"The fact that he stood up for his beliefs" was refreshing to you.
All I was trying to find out was how far you would go. It's easy to applaud someone for standing up for their beliefs, when they are ones you agree with.

Let me rephrase, then. Here's my view:
It's easy, not "refreshing," to stand on the side of popular opinion.

Cant speak for everyone but i would feel the same.
Although i would like to know the full context of this story.
If he was told to not read religious statements in his earlier submission and chose to do so anyway then i applaud him.
If he gave a "fake" speech for approval without religious statements thereby deceiving the Admin and then changing it up even though there was no resistance then i don't think that is cool.

It was Liberty High School. I graduated from there so I know many people that were there. Apparently the school district (Pickens County) was recently sued by the Freedom from Religion Organization (or some name that is similar) because a volunteer student usually stands up at every board meeting and requests to say a prayer. He did submit a speech to the administration for approval, and they were scanning for religious content, as well as, other material that they may deem inappropriate. He tore up the original speech as he began, and then said "I think most of you will understand when I say this.... (began prayer)."
