NCAA - Not Our Job To Insure Academic Quality

Apr 1, 2015, 7:32 PM

After years of making the case that the education of athletes is paramount, the NCAA now says it has no legal responsibility to make sure education is actually delivered.

Shameful.

Its also not their job to enforce child abuse laws either...

but that didn't stop them from kicking PennSt in the gonads....and, of course, they've had to rescind a bunch of the penalties they levied on the Nits

Dont let their words fool you, it IS their job to insure academic standards among its member institutions, but in no way do they have any LEGAL recourse in enforcing these standards.

LEGAL, maybe not... However, they can hold a standard to

The NCAA it is more akin to a private club. I do not think there is any legal action a University can take because technically they do not have to be held to any standard if they leave the NCAA.

Now an anti trust angle would interesting.

We all knew that the so called ACC commissioner Swoffie would get this swept under the rug. Just how much UNCheats paid will never be known. The AD's and Presidents should get together and fire him and kick UNCheats out of the conference. They are an embarrassment to the ACC.

They are right

Apr 1, 2015, 9:50 PM

they are not in the business of evaluating the quality of classes. Thats the job of the services that accredit universities. If the NCAA was in the business of auditing class schedules then they would have to set some standards for each major. The NCAA is there to ensure that the players are initially eligible and advance toward a degree. But everybody knows not all degrees are equal. There is a difference between a biochemistry program at Stanford than a circus degree at FSU. How is the NCAA supposed to determine which is legit and which isn't?

The NCAA can hammer UNC for lack of institutional control and basically falsifying documents (ie transcripts). But if a school wants to create basically sham courses there isn't much the NCAA can do about it. The university is at risk of no longer being an accredited school. Thats bigger than the NCAA.
