Aero's home improvement question of the day

Feb 5, 2019, 10:24 AM

aerozeptallica so I can find this later.

One bathroom currently has one of those sliding glass doors that get all gross and hard to clean.

What all has to happen if I remove this and just go with a show curtain?

Are the styles with a hinged door or those big rollers on top really any better?

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

hinged door prob ghana get nastier than slider?

Feb 5, 2019, 10:26 AM

based on the 2 that I've had....never had a slider tho.

If you remove it, you'll have to contend with the screw holes and caulk residue (lulz) left behind

Would plugging the screw holes with caulk

Feb 5, 2019, 10:28 AM

prevent any water issues until such a time as I could redo all of the tile?

As long as it's not a ###### caulk

get quality silicone caulk like:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-GE-Silicone-2-Kitchen-Bath-Sealant-GE5040-12C/100663319

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

for plugging a few holes, it prob doesn't matter

Feb 5, 2019, 10:34 AM

but for legit caulking, hellz yeah

I caulked part of my shower with DAP Kwik Seal Ultra, and part with the next step down

You can tell where one ends and the other begins.

also, cleaning and prep plays a BIG part in how it holds up. Found that out the last time, too

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no prob. Getting off old caulk could be difficult.***

yeah it is

Feb 5, 2019, 10:32 AM

I removed a hinge door in rental. Was going to replace, but decided to take it all apart, and attempt to clean it that way.

that worked well enough to convince me NOT to buy a new door. the hardest part was cleaning all the caulk off, on the door, but mostly the shower stall surfaces

It's hard, so she relishes it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you're saying that your old caulk is hard?

Feb 5, 2019, 10:36 AM

...and then something about relish?

u nasty

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Feb 5, 2019, 11:36 AM

It's her job and she likes it with relish.

With all the serious talk and no one bringing up the fact that there was talk of plugging holes with caulk... Just sayin.. Glad things have been made right.

caulk will eventually leak.

Feb 5, 2019, 11:07 AM [ in reply to Would plugging the screw holes with caulk ]

Thats what caulk does best. If you don't make those holes water tight, it will leak under the tub and will rot the sub floor.

To do it right, you're going to need to epoxy or re-glass/re gelcoat those holes.

Acetone will soften a lot of the caulk, and there are other debonding agents that will remove the really tough stuff.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

anything glass you'll have to clean it every month

Feb 5, 2019, 10:27 AM

to keep the soap scum from building up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With the door we have now, the glass isn't the problem.

Feb 5, 2019, 10:29 AM

It is the track it is on and the seals that are just not getting clean anymore.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we had one o those years ago, just took it off,

Feb 5, 2019, 10:29 AM

caulked the holes, put up a shower curtain rod, and done.

Did this right before we had a yard sale, and sold it complete with mildew and soap scum. True story.

I like the glass doors

Feb 5, 2019, 10:50 AM

Our shower is encapsulated in glass, I call it "The Viewing Cube". Just the other day my wife was standing at the sink brushing her teeth, and I smushed my butt up against the glass and let a glorious fart rip. I call those "Enhanced Farts", because you really get a lot better quality sound out of them that way.

Good times.

Wife was taking a shower in a viewing cube a few weeks ago. She wouldn't let me in there with her, so I sat on the crapper and rubbed one out, much to her disgust.

Is the shower a fiberglass stall or...

Feb 5, 2019, 11:06 AM

is it a fiberglass tub with tile surround?

If it's a stall fiberglass repair will probably be all that's needed. If it's a tile surround you'll need to either match the tile (if that's possible) or remove several along the border in a pattern which will look coordinated and replace them with something which either coordinates with the existing tile or is radically different to show contrast and appear designed by some touchy feely interior designer from a gay nightclub. NTTAWWT

All this assumes you want to get out with a product which is suitable to your budget.

Tub is old, it may even be iron. Walls all around

Feb 5, 2019, 11:11 AM

are simple square tiles. Color may be hard to match though.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you can live with a few caulked-over holes

Feb 5, 2019, 11:15 AM

I wouldn't be replacing no tiles until you're ready for an entire, massive bathroom remodel. Which may be never.

Iron tubs...

Feb 5, 2019, 11:19 AM [ in reply to Tub is old, it may even be iron. Walls all around ]

are coating with porcelain which is a bit more expensive to repair but it can be done. First take a magnet to the tub then look for fasteners along the sill to see how much damage is done. My guess is that an acid bath on that area under the sill and a few spot repairs are in order.

If it's Fglass the cost will be much less.
