Another OSU fan

Dec 27, 2019, 2:56 PM

I come in peace! Sorry this is so close to gameday but I just found you guys over here and wanted to share a few quick thoughts/commments. Not interested in trash talking. Not my style. Had a cup of coffee coaching some small college ball so I am more into the matchups and analytics of the game.

OSU Defense: Mattison's (the real DC, calls the plays, NOT Hafley) goal is to stop the run on first and second down, then get exotic on third down and long. Base D is a 4-3. The Sam is the typical "walk-out" LB who plays the edge, with the Mike and Will being traditional inside LB's. Coverage wise, OSU is a Single High, Cover 1 and 3 team. The LB's are traditionally just zone droppers in C3. I mention this because it is where the most success has been had against OSU's defense. Running slants and curls and digs in the windows behind the backers but in front of the deep thirds in C3. A catch and then a missed tackle here is what scares me the most in this game. Deep routes like fades and corner routes have been rare, but OSU has not played against three WR's and a QB as talented as Clemson. No doubt Clemson will take some shots, but I expect to see a lot of back shoulders and deep curls and comebacks when it comes to the outside guys. Posts are rare against any single high defense. Possible seam routes stressing the area between the safety and the CB if they can catch OSU in C3. I expect to see a lot of bunch sets from Clemson to loosen up OSU CB's. Lots of crossers and other man beaters like that. OSU's CB's are talented (Okudah will be CB#1, Wade will go late first round, and Arnette no lower than second). Wade is the slot CB, Arnette and Okudah take the outside guys. OSU plays with three true CB's and one MOF safety in Fuller. Fuller is good, but not as great as Malik Hooker was in 2016.

LBs are solid, but probably the weakest of the three groups. Werner is the Sam and will cover the TE in C1. He is about like Muse but plays Sam. Goes about 6-3 235. Some teams with good TE's have tried to target him but he has very much held his own in coverage. The two inside LB's are solid. Harrison is the best of the bunch. Borland and Browning will rotate at Mike. Browning is the better athlete and will blitz a good amount. Borland, not really as athletic, is in the right spot more often than Browning so they both play.

DL is one of the best OSU has had here. Depth inside, not as much outside. Better against the run than the pass. As much as OSU fans will hate to admit, Chase's pass rush WAS neutralized in the last two games. His impact was still felt though with two and three blockers being utilized on him to accomplish this on a very consistent basis. Tyreke Smith is probably the second best pass rushing DE. His health has been on and off all year so he hasn't played many snaps, but word is he is ready to go now. Five star Zach Harrison is shaping up to be the next great DE though and will play more in passing situations.

Overall, I would be happy with a 2016 like DEFENSIVE performance, knowing that the offense can actually do their part this year. 32 points would be my over/under for Clemson's offense.

OSU Offense:
60/40 run to pass. Gone are the days of the QB heavy run offense and horizontal screen game that Meyer loved. Gone is JT Barrett who, while tough, was definitely limited in the passing game. Gone is the offensive staff who Meyer fired after the last time we played each other. The run game is still Day's emphasis, but it's the passing game that has changed for the better. More emphasis on attacking vertically instead of horizontally.

The interior OL is definitely the strength. Tackles are good not great. The unit overall is better at run blocking than pass pro. They have given up a lot of sacks 2-3 per game, but the fault mostly lies on Fields. He is somewhat of a slow processor and a little too careful with the ball. Not nearly as bad as JT Barrett, but much slower than Haskins who was great at anticipating open guys. Fields does have a good arm though and can make any throw he needs, when he chooses.

Dobbins took it up a notch this year and is running very hard and is noticeably faster. The backup, Teague, is a North South runner that has a great burst and power combo, but isn't as shifty as Dobbins.

The best WR is Chris Olave. Low 4.4 type of guy. More fast than shifty. The other WR's are all good, four-star, 4.5 or faster type of guys. KJ Hill plays the slot and is the veteran guy. Mack is the other outside guy. Of all three, he is the most drop prone. Wilson is the superstar freshman of the group. Will start next after the starting three graduate. Usually has between 1-4 catches a game. Can do it all, posts, comebacks, fades, go's, etc. #2 WR in last years class. Bin Victor is the tallest at 6'4. Highly recruited guy out of Florida but never really lived up to his ranking. Has had his best year yet as a senior but still looks like a baby giraffe out there sometimes.

Winning or losing, Day will try to pound the rock with Dobbins. Passes are usually long down the sideline or short and to the flats. He does a good job of mixing things up. Using Play-Action off similar looking runs. He has shown to really target certain players if they are the weak spot. He's a first year coach, but there is reason they stayed with him instead of doing a national search. He's more of a "love-em up" coach, rather than Urbans, "grind-em down" style. The players have really taken to him and are playing hard for him. I think the game will be won up front on both sides. If OSU can run the ball, keep Clemsons O off the field, and subsequently stop Clemson from running consistently, then they will win. If Clemson's D can force third and longs and the offense can get Etienne to stay over 5.5 ypc, then Clemson will win.

It goes without saying that turnovers and penalties could determine the outcome. OSU has been decent at getting turnovers and only really had one game (PSU) where the turnover bug came out. Other than that they have been great. I know Lawrence hasn't thrown an INT in the last six games.

My only prediction will be that the game gets into the low 30's and will come down to the wire. Good luck! Should be a great game!

Great post, thanks for the analyses. I have not been able to watch OSU this year, so that is helpful. The one thing I know is OSU has more team speed than when we played you 3 years ago. Several keys to the game, my concern is our DL against your OL. A couple of teams have been able to run the ball against us which keeps the ball away from our offense.

Re: Another OSU fan

Dec 27, 2019, 3:30 PM

That is what OSU are hoping for.

As for the team speed. I would say ever since Meyer has been here, straight up speed has never been the issue and wasn't in 2016. 2016 was all about poor offensive schemes and poor QB play. Once you are one-dimensional, you are screwed. Hence why all those offensive coaches were fired after that game.

Good read. Please don’t throw water bottles as we beat you by two touchdowns. Be careful of Coots circling dumpsters.

So basically it comes down to this...

Dec 27, 2019, 3:27 PM

we gotta try and slow down or stop Dobbins and Fields and y'all gotta try and slow down or stop Trevor and Etienne. Whichever defense pulls that off wins the game.

Did I mention that we also have Tee Higgins, Justyn Ross, Amari Rodgers, Frank Ladsen Jr, jumbo package in the red zone, our all star linebacker Skalski is due to kick an extra point in a game, Tyler Davis is due to rush for a touchdown from the goal line.

Wait, I have not even started on our All-American defense yet....

Go Tigers!!!!

Welcome to TNet. All of your observations seem reasonable, so I would like to limit my comments to two.
1. I think that medium, over the middle weakness that you point out could be very important. Our big WRs can often turn those quick slants into house calls. And Amari Rogers can live in the middle and runs like an RB after the catch. I am not sure how well we will be able to use Galloway (TE) since he missed the whole year, but if he is up to speed, he could exploit that area on hooks and seam routes.

2. I just can't bring myself to believe that y'all can line up and just run it down our throats. I understand that your inside guys are real road graders, but we are confident that BV will scheme the front enough to reduce any advantage you might have there. It is our belief that he will force young Mr. Fields to beat us with his arm while disguising his coverages and confusing Field's head. As you have noted, he can be slow to read the D. We think that will be magnified with BVs wizardry.

I agree, if y'all can run the ball consistently, that will enhance your chances of winning significantly. But even if you do you will have to keep up with our offensive scoring.

We will see. Welcome to the board and I hope y'all have a good game tomorrow.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are reasonable

Dec 27, 2019, 5:42 PM

and didn't throw in a lecture. Thanks for that. I hope it's a safe game for both teams.

My Conclusion

Dec 27, 2019, 6:06 PM

OSU is only team that has a chance against Clemson and Vice Versa.

This is the Natty.

Good luck stopping Trevor Lawrence, he is basically unfair.

I anticipate you stopping the run and Trevor having to have about 500+ total yards.

I haven’t seen any Juan come close to stopping Trevor including last year’s Best Team Ever Tua’s Bama who also had multiple 5*’s in secondary running press man.

If you try to run press man this game will be over early.

Day is a great schemer/adjuster/playcaller so that is the ONLY reason this will be a game. Urban was stubborn and slow to adjust gameplans if it wasn’t working i.e. 31-0

Trevor is the best player in CFB and its not close, but you will have to wait for jan 14th for anyjuan to admit it.

Very good read.

On defense, it comes down to (1) stopping Dobbins, (2) getting some pass rush penetration up the middle (3) not allowing deep completions [Olave] and (4) don't let Fields convert 3rd and longs by scrambling . Force him to beat us with mid and short range passing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Welcome friend.

Glad you dropped by and appreciate you're kind attitude. We've gotten a lot of knuckle-draggers from other teams this year. It's refreshing to meet a man who loves college football like us and isn't crazy. Hope you get something out of this site. Wishing you and yours the best.

Well good game tigers. That was a tough one to stomach. Who knew execution in the red zone would be the determining factor in the game.

I was worried about catch and runs on intermediate routes and you guys exploted that. Was really surprised how much Lawrence ran by design. That had to be more than average?

It came down to execution in all three areas and Clemson was just a hair better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was a helluva game by both teams!

Dec 29, 2019, 1:35 AM

Good effort by both. Much better to watch than the LSU beat down of Oklahoma!
