New Orleans family friendly eateries, any suggestions

Jan 2, 2020, 6:23 PM

We will be staying downtown near Superdome and FanFest...TIA

I highly recommend Drago's and the chargrilled oysters...

Located in the Hilton Riverside on Poydras Street.

That was the team hotel for the Sugar Bowl v. Bama two years ago.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Y’know, all the hype over the chargrilled oysters is misplaced IMO. If you just love butter and garlic I guess they’re ok but that’s all you taste. I’ve had them from a couple different places but won’t have them again...and I love oysters.

Breakfast at Brennan's is a long standing tradition in New Orleans. We ate there in the 1980's so you may want to check Trip Advisor for more recent reviews, but it definitely felt elegant and special.

If you have family members who are more partial to familiar foods, restaurant chains like IHOP and Olive Garden are located across the river in Metairie & Kenner.

My parents took me to Brennan's as a kid.

It’s been a few years since I’ve been there, but I like Mulates which is across the street from the convention center, where the fan fest is. It is (or at least was) good New Orleans fare and music...not fancy and kid friendly. Should check all of your boxes. It will be busy so I would call ahead.

Bubba Gumps on the French Quarter isn’t bad. Lots of Forest Gump memorabilia and souvenirs

Poboys: Parkways
Breakfast: Surreys. Or maybe Molly’s Rise and Shine.
Seafood: Superior
Italian: Mandinas
Oysters. Pascals Manales at the stand up oyster bar (one of the last in the city).
Nicer: Palace Cafe or Mister Bs.

With the exception of the last, these are non touristy and cool and very casual. The first four are an easy Uber. The last are close to you.

Dude, you’re in New Orleans. Don’t do a chain restaurant based on a movie. Save that for Myrtle Beach.

We always made sure to get lunch at Central Grocery. Usually muffulettas, but they have lots of other things on the menu. Never been disappointed.

Dragos in downtown or Metarie...BBQ oysters...or at least flame broiled...will kill you and make you wish you were dead again...made the mistake of taking my kids there on vacation to Destin...they ate 6 dozen and I #### near had to take a second job! Don't know if the Gumbo Pot is still downtown but they made the best gumbo around...any kind you wanted!

Too many great places to list, here are some great ones w/in walking distance of your hotel:

Cafe du Monde will be a treat you will enjoy and the kids will never forget.

Mothers was sold, new owners, now not great as it was.

Drago's is now in your hotel, no need to go to the original, it is just as good. Wonderful Seafood.

Gumbo Shop, still great.

Bon Ton, definitive Crab au Gratin, best ever Bread Pudding w/ Rum Sauce.

Ralph and Kakoo's seafood.

Galatoires classic fantastic, but not casual.

K Paul's still amazes.

Mannings, a sports bar/restaurant, not known for food but might be fun for sports kids.

Myles Brennan is LSU back-up QB, his family has a few restaurants nearby: Commanders Palace, Brennans, Adeles, Palace Cafe, Dickie Brennans Steak House. All consistently among the great restaurants in the world.
