I survived CV, 5 days on couch!

Aug 21, 2020, 10:04 AM

Mild Fever, nausea, migraines, body aches, no appetite, bad taste in mouth and tired. Almost like a bad hangover for 5 days minus the fever. Add in another couple days of fatigue. But all in all, not as bad as last bad flu I had 20yrs ago.

People usually ask about age, I turned 50 in June.

Re: I survived CV, 5 days on couch!

Aug 21, 2020, 10:09 AM

Sounds exactly like when I had it. My fatigue lasted about a week longer but all in all it wasn’t bad. I agree with the flu being a lot worse. I’m 37.

Hey coward, whoever TD’d my poast and the OP just man up and explain yourself. Don’t like what the facts are? Don’t like the fact that it isn’t killing everybody who gets it and our entire country shutting down is not necessary? Of course you won’t man up. Jerk.

Re: I survived CV, 5 days on couch!

Aug 21, 2020, 11:13 AM

Thanks again. Just know you are the few and far between. Because the majority on here like to hear good news. Like the OP getting through this and doing better. Most of us on here support each other when we go through tough times and it makes us happy when there’s a positive outcome. But there will always be the miserable ones in life who don’t like good outcomes and hate it when people make it through rough situations. Maybe one day you’ll look at things in a more positive manner and enjoy life better. I’m not mad, I’m really not. It’s just sad there’s people out there that like to rain on everybody’s parade.

I gave you a TU. I am in my later 40's. I had similar symptoms. My skin hurt all over my body, fever, crazy sweats, chills at times, and just uncomfortable. It was manageable. I have never had the flu so I can't compare. Anyway, not worth shutting the country down. I am a liberal by the way. We need to be all the way open imo.

I've apparently made some "friends" on here that TD every post of mine they see even if all I said was "Go Tigers!" It's particularly sad and pathetic when they do it to folks simply posting a positive update about their health.

Everything is political, and **** you if you don't lean the same direction as me, amirite? How dare anyone acknowledge multiple perspectives! Calling the behavior of some of these folks childish is insulting to children.

Aug 23, 2020, 5:53 AM [ in reply to Re: What state are you located in, if willing to divulge? ]

...along with my regular job, I worked as a seasonal employee at Lowe's in Beaufort from Jan - August for some extra change, masks not mat mandated for employees or shoppers until sometimes around May I think, store always packed, no employees ever got Covid and only rumor of two folks in store that had it, and Beaufort County an alleged hotspot for the virus. Like everyone else I'm curious about transmission/etc, but with all the customers there/proximity and constantly moving around products you'd almost think that store would have been swamped/epicenter of Covid cases....

@76er, live outside Summerville, SC. Not sure where I got it. I've been pretty well covered but have gone in some big box stores, mainly Lowe's. Most shopping is Publix. Had some Dr visits at MUSC, but can't point at any one specific place and say Bingo.

Aug 21, 2020, 10:20 AM

My son tested positive and really did not know he had been sick. His girlfriend was positive so, it made sense. I have tested negative twice,,, once, the nasal test and once giving blood. The odd thing is I was positive for the anti-bodies, my wife was negative. Go figure.... I am 59, my son is 28.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I survived CV, 5 days on couch!

Aug 21, 2020, 11:04 AM

Glad to hear you got over it. If you test positive for the antibodies that means that you have already had the virus correct? Reason I was asking is I know quite a few nurses that get tested weekly and have tested positive for antibodies but have never been sick or tested positive with the nasal test. My point being I think this virus was around long before it was announced. I know people who were very sick in early 2019 and thought it was the flu but tested negative.

Aug 22, 2020, 10:12 AM [ in reply to Re: I got it in Sturgis ]

Me it was about 3 times as bad as cold and 1/3 of flu. I could still do stuff if I needed to where with the flu I have had to give myself an hour pep talk just to walk 20 ft to the bathroom. 2 days of fever, followed by : days feeling like in a bubble. No body aches or cough but skin felt sensitive like I had been sunburnt. After day 5 felt better gradually for 5 days then pretty much over it. Just tiredness out of nowhere at times but after 2 weeks that was gone too. So about a month altogether. Wife, on the other hand, got double pneumonia from it and was in the hospital 10 days and just got off of in home oxygen after being home 5 wks. She still has about 3 months expected to fully recover the lung damage but is light yrs ahead of when she was discharged. Kids had it but got over it like a day cold. Most people I know say it’s not unbearable and that was my experience because most can still do daily tasks. Most common factor is that unlike the flu, the symptoms and effects last about 4 times longer

Yes, I'm always glad to hear that someone survived covid-19, but I'm just as happy for the ones that chose to wear a mask and didn't contract, or run the risk of infecting someone else with the covis-19 virus!!! They deserve a pat on the back as much or more than the survivors of the virus bc, the ones that get it are mostly the ones that done nothing to protect themselves or anyone they've been around!!!

Re: Very glad you are doing well!

Aug 21, 2020, 10:32 PM

No true. I masked up and got it. My fellow Clemson grad buddy and family of 4 all got it and they heavily mask up and protect themselves due to grandmother in bad shape with the dirty C word.

The mask helps the spread but if the air around you has the virus, unless you have full face shield and N95 mask, you are just about as susceptible as no mask.

You probably heard it said, maybe not, but if you can smell a fart through your mask or if someone could spit in your eye as they walk by, you are very susceptible to the virus in an enclosed environment.

Re: Very glad you are doing well!

Aug 23, 2020, 11:09 AM

This is a time in my life that I'm glad that I wear glasses, and I have to wear them to see what's in front of me. When I was younger, I would wear the smallest glasses I could get to be kool, but getting older with vision much worse and need progressive lens so I can read small print and see where I'm going, and now I use a bigger lens. And now with the covid-19, I feel that my glasses give me some protection of the germ getting in my eyes, and with the mask being underneath the bottom of my glasses and my breath out the top and sides of my glasses give my added protecting of my eyes, but I go through a lot of that anti lens fog, or I would be just as blind as without my glasses.

The first Clemson cloth mask didn't have the piece that holds them tight around the nose, and I took a couple of stitches out the seam, and wormed one of those wire pipe cleaners through the seam for a nose piece, and now I don't have to use so much anti fog spray on my glasses. The wire pipe cleaners is a good fix for the cloth mask that don't have a nose wire. I got the idea from my sister in law that makes the 3 layer cloth mask for who ever wants them for $5 bucks each, and she gave me the pipe cleaner idea that I fix my cloth Clemson mask with. I haven't bought any Clemson mask since they first started selling them, but, some of the newer ones look to have the nose wire in them, and if so, that was a needed improvement!!!;)

ICATiger, Have you been to where folks donate blood and plasma. If your immune system was strong enough to fight covid-19 off in 5 days, you surely should donate some your plasma to help folks that aren't as lucky as you with a healthy immune system.

What you donate could without a doubt save a life of someone that would've died if not for a generous donation from someone like you!!!

Actually, anyone that has contracted covid-19 virus, and they won that battle at home without being admitted in the hospital, it would be honorable of you to donate your Plasma that could save the life of another!!! Who knows, it may help save the life of a soldier who has put their life on the line for our country!!!

Article on CNN webpage early this AM stated that as many as

Aug 21, 2020, 11:17 AM

60 million Americans may have had the virus already this year but didn't know it. Now the article has disappeared? Wonder why. Oh yeah, because of Politics. If those numbers are correct, then the death rate is about 1/3 of 1 percent. About the same as every other virus in the world. Still don't think Politics is at play here?

Do you seriously think the medical profession is so wrapped up in politics that they would intentionally mislead?

Here are some things to consider.

You are defining Covid death rate as the number of deaths divided by the number who "may have had it". You are comparing that number to "every other virus in the world". I don't think you know the death rate for other viruses based on the number of people who "may have had it". You are not comparing apples to apples. For instance, I looked on the CDC site and found that about 1% of the people who tested positive for flu (not may have had it) actually died of the flu.

Now let's forget the speculative number of those "who may have had it" and think about people who are actually tested. Even that number is not a real apples to apples comparison because of the now large number of people who are getting tested. That numerator is getting bigger by the day (which is a good thing). That is not the case for "every other virus in the world". I don't recall people getting test nationwide for a virus just because they came in contact with someone who had it, as is the case with Covid.

Another thing to think about is transmissibility. Covid is VERY transmissible, so the death rate represents a lot of deaths. You say other viruses have that death rate, what is the tramsmissibility or the R0 of those viruses? As of the end of July, we had 160k extra deaths in the US compared to this time last year. You can get the data from the CDC. Those extra deaths occurred mostly in the early part of the pandemic, and as you remember, cities with high population densities were putting bodies in refrigerated trucks and turning people away. The hospitals were saturated. The key is to slow transmission so that we don't do that again.

Think about the entire "system" and give the politics accusation a rest. It is getting old.

yes, the healthcare profession

Aug 21, 2020, 2:09 PM

is VERY political. with younger doctors, not so much, they are still trying to prove themselves. but older doctors are always maneuvering to undermine someone else to make a little bit more money. and the same can be said for just about EVERY profession. is it the norm? of course not, but it happens often and everywhere. Take Dr. Fauci for example, yes he is a doctor, but he is a politician just like Biden, Trump, Obama, or any senator or congressman right now.

Aug 21, 2020, 10:48 PM [ in reply to Re: Article on CNN webpage early this AM stated that as many as ]

@8992, the problem with the early deathrate was the lack of knowledge about the increased rate in elderly. That said, Gov Cuomo did one if the stupidest things I could ever imagine, he sent CV patients to elderly/adult care facilities, trying to leave the hospital beds open. Well, all he did was infect and kill more elderly. There was a Navy hospital ship sent to help house and care for the sick which in over a month saw less than 190 patients, yet the sick were sent to elderly care facilities. Well those facilities were not equipped to house more patients, didn't have ventilators, and the highly transmissible disease was just passed around elderly like a box of cookies.

To not use medical facilities is a giant mistake. I honestly believe there should be some major fallback on the administration that managed CV in NYC. They basically signed toe-tags for the sick they sent and for the healthy that already lived there. One of the largest health debacles in the world was NYC.

Re: Article on CNN webpage early this AM stated that as many as

Aug 22, 2020, 11:07 AM

Thst does sound like it was a mistake. In the "heat of war", I don't know how obvious that mistake was. Like you said, we didn't know a whole lot about the virus, and he must have been expecting a wave of patients. As I've said before, I hope we all, especially our decision makers, have the humility to learn from this.

My pushback is against the concept that the medical community is somehow motivated to provide inaccurate information because of politics. I think that is disrespectful to doctors and dangerous to public health in some cases.

Aug 23, 2020, 12:19 PM [ in reply to Re: Article on CNN webpage early this AM stated that as many as ]

The amount of folks that has had covid-19 and made it, good for them, and I am so happy for them, and their families that didn't have to suffer their death. But I also see the numbers of the people who have lost their life with the covid-19, and those are the very sad numbers. With every death, there is a number of people that their lives have changed for ever bc of the lost of a dear loved one, and that is sad.

Each of us has to be responsible for our actions, and our actions must be to do whatever possible to try and stop the spread of this deadly virus, and we do that by protecting ourselves from the ones who just don't care if they were responsible for another's life bc they believed they were healthy enough that the virus wouldn't kill them. Those that you see out without a mask, that is how they feel, it's their thought that covid-19 won't kill them, and they don't care if they get it, and they don't care if they spread it, and they don't care if the people they spread to dies from it!!!!

Congrats, it's great that you've survived it so well, I would consider donating plasma for research. There are many, mostly older than you that have a much harder time of it.

And by the way, if it put you on the couch for 5 whole days, then you're kind of a sissy. ;)

I had to milk it a little.

Honestly it really messed with my sleep. It was weird that when I did fall asleep, I would have some really crazy dreams. Not sure if I was just nervous about having it or if it actually had me tormented by the illness but I experienced some crazy twitches and dreams for several nights.

Aug 21, 2020, 2:13 PM

which is a common symptom with covid. but I think that is what is tricky about this virus. it is different for everyone. one of my co workers had it and never had the "common symptoms" like a fever, cough, or shortness of breath. all he had was muscle aches, diarrhea, fatigue and nausea. another girl got it and all she had was a sore throat. but my boss got it and went through a rough time. said she still feels like something just isnt right.

The leg pain didn't feel similar to that you might get when you have the flu. The closest thing I can relate it to is that dull, persistent pain when you aggrivate the sciatic nerve. One day I felt it in both hips and down the front of my legs. The next day it was down my backside and backs of both legs. Yesterday it was in the right ankle. Disappeared as quickly as it came about. I read online that "strange leg pain" seems to be one of a host of odd symptoms that can strike some people. Other than that, I have felt fine.

Glad to hear your experience was on the better side. Especially since we're close to same age. I had high school friend who had it early April - in bed 11 days. Her husband got it on 12th day - in hospital 2 wks and finally turned in his last oxygen tank few weeks ago. Crazy how different people have such different reactions to it. I hope & pray your recovery continues with no lasting effects. As for the TD - maybe because not football related but who knows.

As for those trying to make it political - I get it. Everyone thinks that everyone else thinks just like them. If you love sports - its hard to understand people who don't watch sports. I love superhero movies - I can't fathom how some of my friends will not even watch one free on TBS. Just no interest in it. So I say that to say this.....you're obsessed with Trump v Biden. A lot of us are not. I can't stand either, personally. Maybe, just maybe, people are posting to share their thoughts - nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. Hard to imagine, for you - I get it.

Not sure if that's for me but I'll answer. My temp has been elevated a couple of times but neither time did it reach 100. Haven't given thought of donating plasma but I donate blood regularly (universal donor), so definitely something I will consider.

@Miura, I am single bachelor, no others in house except my boykin. She liked the long hours of do nothing and had company.

My fever was weird, came in what felt like big waves but it was never more than a couple points. My normal temp runs low 97-97.1, and I got into low 99's a couple times.

As far as donating plasma, you might be able to answer this. I am a cancer survivor with Metastatic Melanoma, multiple tumors previously in lungs and adrenal. I made the assumption that my blood may be polluted for lack of better terms after yrs of chemo, radiation and no guarantee that I'm 100% cured with potential of just "remission".

Glad you made it. Here's a more complicated story from an RN/Mgmt type who thought she was headed for a 2 week illness:

"My assumption when I was diagnosed was that a mild case of COVID-19 meant a two-week illness. I’m on week eight. After two relapses, this virus has kept me exhausted, out of breath and away from my friends and family for two months. Close friends and colleagues continue to deliver groceries and provide impromptu meals. Some send my favorite kind of medicine: chocolate. To be sick this long has given me even greater compassion for the patients we care for with chronic illnesses. While a lot of attention comes during the days following diagnosis, it’s important to check in with those who are sick for weeks, months or longer when they’re running out of energy and resilience.

As we’ve all learned, COVID-19 will be with us for a long time. Some of you have had it already; others of you will. Some of you have become expert COVID caregivers; others will learn how."

They are 80 and 81, have been married 59 years and have a lot of life left to live. I live in Atlanta and they don't. I say everyday, thank God I got it instead of them.

I am very happy to hear that you came through it as you did. We are both very fortunate.
