I've finally become a "senior engineer"...
May 19, 2020, 8:37 AM
|
|
Not by title... we don't title our engineers as senior or junior. Heck I'm the only engineer here that has an engineering degree, IIRC.
BUT, this morning in our staff meeting, the claim was made that we have had many more failures of a particular bearing in recent years and that I need to "dig into why".
In my younger years, I would have accepted the premise and gone 110% into solving the issue.
This morning, I have decided to go in 1000% into disproving the premise that we have had more failures recently.
I have arrived...

there is no problem to solve. Next thing you know, you will be consulting a young engineer to do the same and then berate him for not doing his/her job.

They'll never be a younger engineer.
I'll run them off.
Plus I've dug in a nice little rut and refused to train anybody else with a college degree.
Man, I really am a "senior engineer"!

I haven't had an official title change, or promotion, or anything like that.
I just had the realization that I'm like the other tenured guys who would rather argue with management than fix a problem.

You're not allowed be called an engineer in most states
May 19, 2020, 8:46 AM

Unless you're a Professional Engineer.
South Carolina, for example, will report you to the board and fine you and your company. And many other states you do business in will fine you as well if you were fined in another state. Fine reciprocity! Lutz.

A former coworker messed with another coworker's Microsoft Word to replace "Staff Professional" with "Shaft Professional." Only one letter got out, but it was quite funny.

We call ours Mechanical Designer or Electrical Designer
May 19, 2020, 9:04 AM
[ in reply to lol, we were Staff Professionals until we passed the PE. ] |

One of our Mechanical Designers answered a code question asked by DHEC in SC that was engineering related. The great state of South Carolina deemed that email response 'practicing engineering without a license. That was a fun couple of weeks.
Also, as an FYI if your email signature says John Smith, PE and you don't have a PE in South Carolina, the state of SC will try and fine you for that as well. Representing yourself as a PE when you're not.

Theoretically, you could fix that by putting the

state(s) you are licensed in after your name and title, but that seems kinda stupid.
I hate putting a bunch of letters after my name, but I do have PE and CFM in my emails.

Yep. I have a special signature just for SC and stupid northeastern states.

stupid.
I need to get a MAPE, but I abhor their application process so I haven't started. You have to provide example drawing sets...really!?!? How did you enjoy fill that out?
Also, I typically laugh at the e-mail signature that has:
soccerkrzy, PE*
*AL, CO, FL, MD, NC, NY, VA
But I guess there's a legitimate reason for it.

These bearings are on a central air/oil unit that is much maligned around the plant.
MFer works, though. People just remember the "good ol days" much better than they really were.
