So, I finally came up with my idea for the Old Man's

retirement. Going to find some cabin in the mountains and take everybody up there for a weekend. This weekend I learned that there is one place on earth he hates, Gatlinburg.
Y'all have any suggestions on more remote areas with cabins. Preferable a place I could walk out the back door and go fishing?

family getaway. There are plenty of cabins around and it's still probably the offseason up there so you may can get one for pretty cheap. The one we stayed in did not have a fishing hole right out the back door, but it did have access to a community lake as part of the rental for the weekend. You could canoe around the lake or fish, etc. There are also a few bigger lakes around, lake Glenville is the one we rented a boat on one day which is always an option if it's going to be warm out. Could be worth checking out that area.

just learnt this new computer does't have an up-arrow key.
We went to Highlands with good friends to watch the eclipse, was really nice. Hadn't been there since Clemson days, had no ideer it's a yuppy area now. Cabin and restaurants were reasonable, though. Just a lot of expensive cars riding around up there. Or even Brevard area, not quite as hard to get to.

Look for something on the New River in Ashe County.

It's remote and very non-touristy, but there are some good restaurants and even a brewery or two in the area. West Jefferson is a good epicenter on the map to start your search. I can make inquiries from the relatives up there if need be. Quick Google found this:

A man can get way back in the woods there in a perfectly acceptable domicile and spend many a peaceful day.
Provided, of course, he can skin grizz.

after that time in mid-July, when he'd just hit town and his throat was dry. Thought he'd stop and have himself a brew, and things went south from there.

It's surprisingly economical to rent a VRBO house on Keowee or something though.

Lots of good alternatives there and quite a bit to do, plus some good restaurants.
Used to go there all the time when we owned Masion du Mont de Wilbur.
