Oh, let's have some fun, P&R

Dec 21, 2018, 11:56 AM

Since our government is shutting down and the world is burning, let's have a little fun today.

Here's a great icebreaker question I heard used one time, so I thought I'd throw it y'all and see what you would say.

If you could kick one--and only one--state out of the United States (they have to become their own sovereign nation), which one and why?

I go with Ohio so they have to use a passport to get to SC.

LOL SC is screwed without California's tax funding

Dec 21, 2018, 1:52 PM [ in reply to California. Enough said. ]

SC operates in the red when it comes to government handouts versus government tax revenue.

California is heavily in the black.

I'm going to break the rules of your game

and make multiple choices, with a reason for each.

-Ohio-you already said it, and if you're on a SC-centric forum, you already know why.
-CA--love the state, but it's a different planet from the rest of the country, and you KNOW most of them would love to be an independent country too.
-WV--I would accept the higher coal prices, this state adds nothing substantial to the US.
-CT--everyone.....EVERY ONE I have ever met from Connecticut is a dork and a giant tool.
-FL--because I hate New Yorkers but would hate to cut NYC out of the country's fabric.

The capitol could revert back to the customs house, and we could charge ridiculous fees for entry.

To take the question seriously, you'd want it to be a state that contributes the least economically and culturally while not being landlocked by the US.

Conservatives love to say California while liberals love to say Texas, but losing either of those would be crippling. If nothing else, losing the ports would be awful for US imports and exports.

So without doing deep research into what states contribute what, my first thought is North Dakota. I don't know that it has the means to be self sustaining, though. It might be better for it to be a coastal state. So my second choice would be Maine. I'd entertain arguments for New Hampshire as well.

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.
