Militarization of police

Okay, when we're talking about police reform, let's for a moment put aside the race issue.
Let's just look at what's happened since Congress passed the law in the 90s that allowed surplus military equipment to police forces.
I watched a pretty good movie on Netflix last night; Den of Thieves (stars Gerard Butler). Definitely a must watch if you like bank heist, cops vs. robbers flicks with lines of good and bad blurred. It's got kind of a "Heat" feel to it. Anyway, a climactic showdown ensues between L.A. cops and the bank robbers, and it boils down to military-grade assault weapons on both sides.
That makes for good cinema, but we don't really get stuff like that happening in America (do major armed-to-the-teeth bank heists even happen any more?).
I feel like most of the folks on this board have advocated how the militarization needs to stop. I'm not really on board with the "defund police" movement as ultimately that could cost jobs. But I do see the need to stop supplying military-grade equipment to police.
For example, as discussed in another thread, why does Mount Pleasant or Sullivan's Island need armored personnel transports? In case brunch goes crazy one Sunday and too many girls in their 20s start making Molotov cocktails out of their mimosa carafes?
I feel that is one of the greatest problems we have with police in America; they're getting hand-me-down equipment that was originally build to take on foreign enemy armed forces. And now local police have it to use against American citizens.
Again, I feel the overwhelming majority of people on this board seem to oppose this militarization, but I would like to hear from folks who think this practice needs to continue.

I can maybe get it for a major city or one where police truly may be outgunned. But we can see the riots/protests like this are rare, and there isn't a need for small-town America to have this weaponry. And we're seeing it used in many cases when it isn't involving riots or looting.
It seems like we're arming every police force in America to prepare against us like we're a foreign enemy. Is there any other advanced and free nation that does this?

Just Spit balling here, but there is an understanding that as our debt service increases, we will continue to cut social programs which will lead to more civil unrest in the coming years. There are those that believe meeting this unrest with force is a better solution than making concessions or reforming the current system.

He opened fire when officers tried to execute a search warrant, which doesn't usually call for an APC. And it appears they already had one of those in that picture.
So unless you're wanting all search warrants delivered in armored vehicles, this example doesn't really hold up.
