Maybe before we hand out a nice big contract extension

Feb 22, 2019, 4:15 PM

when a head coach makes only his 4th post-season appearance in 8 years (2 in the NCAA and 2 in the NIT), we should, I don't know, just give him a raise or a bonus? Rather than signing him to a 6 year $15 million extension. I don't know. Just a thought.

What the AD did is like giving a student a scholarship for making an A in one class - one of only 4 A's he's ever had - when the rest of his grades are B's or C's. I'd always thought that it was more about showing consistency and a pattern of excelling rather than rewarding short-term improvement.

I'm not in the Fire Brownell camp, but neither do I have a lot of confidence. But either way, it just seems that the AD went a little overboard with the extension. Last year was a great year. A really great year. Pay him some big bonuses for all of that - I'm all for it. But a 6 year extension when he'd not done a whole lot in 8 and when there was no pattern of improvement - I don't know....

Either way, tomorrow at noon - Go Tigers!

Just curious...

How can you be in the "don't fire" Brownell camp but have no confidence? Not intended to be a smart a$$ comment...just curious.

I understand. I'm not as in-tune with the ins and outs of the program as the AD. I just see the Ws and Ls. He's had SOME success, just not any consistency or shown any pattern of improvement. But there are always intangibles and things we don't see from the stands or the TV screen.

The biggest thing that happened with the extension . . .

was Brad's buyout was immensely reduced. It was a mutual agreement to get the extension. Basically, Brownell was betting on himself to get the job done. We'll see what happens . . . cooler heads than mine will prevail.

Go TIGERS!!!

We did the same thing with Bowden. Paid him for like 5 years after he was let go. Buyout was different than Brownell's though.
