gave in and rebooted my computer. And, sure enough, a Windows update was waiting to be downloaded. I am firmly convinced that Bill Gates has a program that runs anytime an update is waiting that will make your computer run more and more sluggish, until you are forced to reboot to try and solve it. Then, the update download happens as part of the reboot. Diabolical bastid.
