Makling the trip to Athen in a few weeks...advice?

Aug 5, 2014, 3:52 PM

Guys I usually try to make an away game every year but haven't the past few seasons after I graduated but we are making the trip to Athens and just wondering what you guys would recommend down there...we are going with GFs sister and husband which are puppy fans but other family will be there that are Tiger fans...we may or may not have tickets I think it is supposed to be a surprise but wondering what you guys would recommend before kickoff...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

do they throw full beer cans at your head in columbia?

Aug 5, 2014, 4:03 PM

they are extra angry since they lost to us last year

Athens has tons of good restaurants and bars if you will be hanging downtown

In my experience....

while $CU fans are mouthy, ignorant and deluded, they are effectively harmless.

I have been to college football games all across the country and I have never encountered a fan base as bad as UGa. Not even close.

Are you asking about anything in particular?

Aug 5, 2014, 4:07 PM

Like a restaurant or bar or where to park or where to tailgate?

Years ago I used to live in Athens and still have friends who can recommend some things.

As far as recommendations once you are in the stands, I think you get the idea from comments already.

For beer there are a few new microbreweries

Aug 5, 2014, 5:11 PM [ in reply to Re: Are you asking about anything in particular? ]

But my favorite (10+ years ago) used to be The Globe for beers that aren't "technically" imported in Georgia and for sightseeing (back in the day the band crowd like R.E.M. and all). https://www.facebook.com/globe.athens
and http://www.classiccitybrew.com/globe.html

Blue Sky is best place to find Belgian brews. http://blueskyathens.com/

Terrapin Beer for the best local ales and IPAs and an occasional surprise brew. http://terrapinbeer.com/

Food - some chain BBQ but local friends like Butt Hutt best if you can get over the name....http://www.butthuttathens.com/
It's not downtown either.

Last Resort Grill is a long time staple in town. Popular with all crowds, adult and student alike. http://www.lastresortgrill.com/

There's a whole lot more if needed. I haven't been in a number of years, so I'd have to check with friends.

Aug 5, 2014, 5:17 PM

thanks! Yea I don't mess around with all of the diff types of bears, stick to Miller Lite and an occasional PBR or MIL Best Lol but we will def be wanting to check a few of the bars out and catch a bite to eat while we are down there im sure.

Just got some texts/tweets from friends

Aug 5, 2014, 6:06 PM [ in reply to Are you asking about anything in particular? ]

For fine dining (translation - $20+ per head) The National is new and trendy. http://www.thenationalrestaurant.com/

For any time of day there are diners downtown like Johnny Rockets. But also Mama's Boy. http://mamasboyathens.com/
That is within walking distance of the stadium more or less, too.

Best place for beer and pub food. Trappeze. http://trappezepub.com/

Tex-Mex (not downtown) La Parrilla. http://www.lapa.us/

Pizza - Peppino's on South Milledge (wasn't given a link, and can't find one).

All are "opinions" from people I know living there or in Oconee.

Watch out if you're wearing a Clemson shirt...

You will be harassed at best and assaulted at worst.

Seriously.

Re: Watch out if you're wearing a Clemson shirt...

Aug 5, 2014, 4:33 PM

Well that's good to look forward to...I will definitely be wearing all orange no doubt...got the beat UGA shirt for pre game and the sideline polo for game time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would never take a wife/girlfriend into that environment

Aug 5, 2014, 4:31 PM

especially if you are wearing the colors of the opposing team. Their fans are aweful (and that's putting it mildly). Doing so is a decision you will likely regret.

Without question or exception, UGa fans are the most vile and repugnant group of fans I have ever encountered.

Well unfortunately my GF is a dirtpecker..don't know how that happened but she will wear orange to the games so that's a step..well we will be with a couple UGA friends so I don't look for anything stupid to happen but you never know...

The University and local law enforcement had to create....

Aug 5, 2014, 4:43 PM

a Fan Behavior Committee to change fan behavior during home games that includes;

tons of litter,

property damage,

setting couches on fire,

driving beer bottles into the ground then breaking them to expose jagged glass,

abusive language,

rowdy behavior,

fighting,

riots,

guys standing at the top of the stadium urinating over the top of the seating area on to the people entering the stadium below.

Have you ever heard of another school ANYWHERE having to do something like that?

i lived in Athens for 6.5 years...never attended a football game or messed around downtown during one

probably why I enjoyed living there so much

seriously its a great place to live

did attend one basketball game and baseball game every year

my guess is if someone goes over for game they will have a good time

downtown Athens is nice / fun

outside looking in, as far as a road trip...much cooler place to go than cooterville

I would go if I had a chance / didn't have vacation plans

Re: The University and local law enforcement had to create....

Aug 5, 2014, 4:59 PM

well I am thinking with the group I will be with and my overall intelligence I would like to think I would avoid those situations but I was thinking getting there around noon and walking downtown to check out a few bars and grabbing some food then heading back to the tailgate to watch it on tv with a Clemson crew...if I don't have tickets that im not supposed to know about lol

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sure...

Aug 5, 2014, 4:44 PM

True Story. My gamecock friend went to Athens with his buddies for a SC/UGA game. After the game (SC won), one of his buddies was celebrating at the bar, just minding his own business, and a pissed off/bitter/drunk UGA fan came up and PUNCHED HIM IN THE FACE!

IN THA FACE!

Yes, that's how bad their fans are.

Coot fan with his mouth shut AND minding his own businesses? I have to meet this guy. He is a rare bird indeed.

:)

seriously though bet you didn't get the whole story if someone got assaulted.

Aug 5, 2014, 5:11 PM

Haha actually planned around that just from the idiots in Columbia and a few in Atl (GT) so I have planned to ride with her family that are UGA fans, by the way they came to the game last year and he and his wife couldn't quit commenting on how great everyone was and how the experience was awesome and they loved campus, except for a couple older fans that were heckling them during the game but I mean that's to be expected everywhere.

just use proper visitor etiquette and you should have a great time

...i.e. don't rub a big tiger victory in

...Fight the temptation, because thanks to the media, it will be a big win!
