Make Room For More Tents

Feb 24, 2020, 8:45 PM

This is a continuing story, beginning when we left Pyongyang, North Korea, on Dec. 1, 1950. Two of our teams are now in Pusan.
***************************************************************************************************
We had been in Pusan about three or four days when I received word to report to "Terrible Tom's" quarters. My first reaction was to wonder what I had done and was I going to get one of his standard "chewing outs". When I arrived at his quarters, he seemed unusually calm, a far cry to what we had become accustomed. He invited me to sit down and told me he needed my help.

"Two of our other teams will be arriving from a forward position within the next few days. We need to move our current 24-man tents and erect more to house all the men. The two teams will be arriving with a lot of vehicles and equipment. We don't have much space so we've got to figure out how we can allot space to adequately take care of the men and their equipment. A couple of men have already been assigned the task of organizing the space allotments, including where we will move the current tents.
You're an engineer. I want you to be in charge of moving the tents and erecting the additional tents. I need this information ASAP. Can you do that"?

I told him to give me a few minutes to make some estimates and I'd get back with him. The tarp that covers a 24-man tent is a massive item and I had no idea how much it weighed. But it can be removed. Checking the cots and personal items in the tent was another huge weight that could be removed. I was now left with the wooden framework. Making several measurements and a rough calculation of the total weight, we had enough men on site to pick up the framework nd move it to the new site. The one remaining unknown was the construction of the floor. We wouldn't know if the flooring would sag until we began to lift the frame.

I reported back to "Terrible Tom" and gave him my assessment and with 55 - 60 men, we could easily lift and move the framework to the new site.

The men gathered around the framework and on signal, began to slowly lift the framework. The flooring did not sag so everything went off like clockwork. The tents were moved and the other tents were installed in much less time than we had anticipated.

"Terrible Tom" was his usual self during the moving of the tents, chewing out some of the men for no apparent reason. I was tempted to tell him to go back to his quarters but fortunately, I calmed down to avoid a scene.

The guys charged with allocating space for the tents, vehicles and equipment did an excellent job and when the two teams arrived, they were directed to their assigned location. We had one more team still at a forward location. If they received orders to join us at Pusan we would have had to make reservations for them elsewhere.

We will all be living in tents if Bernie Sanders is elected president.

Yes, but at least the rich won't have more than us. So there's that.

ClemTig - I am not sure if that was just in jest, but for clarity I just want to say that is not how communism or socialism works.

The lie of promise in socialism and communism is that people are poor because someone else is wealthy and if you have to make the state powerful enough to monitor what people have and don't have so everyone will be equal in wealth.

But what happens is the state and the people with in it make themselves the new elite and wealthly by taking what belongs to others. Once that starts they don't stop at some certain tax bracket. By then it is too late as their ability to take is coded into the authority of the state. The honest person is still an honest person so the socialist state draws the worst types of human temperament to its siren song of power and control.

Don't let envy of other peoples wealth cause you to be willing to give them the power to take all of yours.

I apologize if you were just joking around, but too many in this country believe the drivel that comes from these socialist politicians.

It was satirical.

Would that be considered organic farming?
