Wizards and denizens of T-Net (or other tags of praise you place 'pon yourselves! ;) ), what is the answer to:
The difference between 'majority' and 'vast majority'? Does it make a difference? If said difference will exist, what is the 'vast' metric? Please, don't anyone suggest it's 'relative'...Albert already did that maff...

Assuming a standard normal distribution i would say it’s the subset that exists between plus and minus two standard deviations of the mean.

Equal number plus one is a majority. Therefore, when I hear

the term "vast" majority, I think they are referring to a "landslide" win, if you will. Meaning, the majority numbers are WAY more than just one more than the minority. A prime example would be Nixon's presidential landslide victory over McGovern in the 1972 election. Nixon won 49 of 50 states, and took 520 Electoral College votes to 17 for McGovern. Now, THAT is a vast majority. But, we all know what happened later. Dayumed plumbers....... :)

I've watched that movie so many times, I can probably recite every line with the sound off.

Given current events, one meaningful line is:

"I'm sorry I started a fight in the middle of your Black Panther party."

There is no difference in the amount they are describing. The term “vast” actually has more to do with the person using it. They use a vague term to sway your opinion of the data set to make you think it is more in the direction they want, hoping to lead you to believe if you aren’t in the “vast” group then you are out of step with the norm. This is the purpose of polling and reporting of polling nowadays - it doesn’t reflect opinion, it tries to shape opinion.

Majority is anything over 50%. Vast majority is anything

over 75% for most people.

For salesmen it is anything over 25%.

For politicians it is anything over zero.

There are many words that are amplified by the addition of words like "very". The idea is to add enough of them so that an ordinary sentence now becomes a paragraph. If one is paid by the number of words, it's a money making scheme.

Still working on the age old quandary of a$$load vs. chitload and where a sheet ton falls in among long, short, and metric tons.
