Louisville D is NOT Alabama D
Sep 29, 2016, 5:05 PM

These fans seems more arrogant than Oklahoma fans, and I don't understand why.
Why do they have so much confidence in their Defense? Watson saw a far better defense in Alabama and had no issue finding a way to effectively dismantle it.
Am I missing something?

We scored 20 against them.
We scored 40 against Bama.
They have a talented defense.

Their frontline guys are talented. Grantham only plays about 13-14 players, total, in any given game, and their backups are like falling off a cliff compared to their starters. What you're looking at is Charlie Strong's holdovers combined with some transfers who got into trouble other places, guys like DE Devonte Fields (TCU) and SS Josh Harvey-Clemons (UGA)...these guys are largely seniors, and are collectively very talented.
Recruited players behind those guys are a problem. Louisville largely gets 2-3-star-rated players and Petrino has never shown he's anything but a slash-and-burn artist; he gets into a place, wins in a hurry, and is gone before 2-3 years have passed...and Petrino has a history of leaving gutted locker rooms behind him, especially on D. When this current crop of players graduate or head to the NFL there will likely be a problem there.
In a close game where the D is pressed and on the field for four quarters, that lack of depth has been a problem in the past, especially late on in seasons as injuries accumulate. But Louisville has just been summarily blowing people off the field this year and games are pretty much decided by halftime. So somebody will have to stage an actual competitive game with these guys before their lack of depth becomes any kind of factor, which hasn't happened yet this year.

Louisville fan here and you have Coach G's rotation about right. This year is a bit different. This will be the first game our starters will likely be on the field for four qtrs. There is no question the the drop off between first team to second team is big. However that is a double edged sword, because it has skewed our defensive stats. Devonte Fields who is our best D player along with James Hearns our leading sack man have only played around 10 minutes of the second half. Our first team D is the freshest D in college football.
For example Marshall had 28 points against us, but you dig deeper and you will find they on scored 7 points on the starters. I actually was on reading this site at the time Marshall put 14 on our second teamers. Lots of folks were asking why LJ was back in the game. Well thats why.
Similar situation with Cuse and FSU as well. FSU put up 10 on our starters.
I hear you about Coach P. We felt exactly the same way when he booked for the Falcons. Even though we were in the Big East at the time we were pissed!!! After his incident at Arkansas his family got together and determined they loved the state of Kentucky and he got the job at WKU and turned them into an Offensive competitor. He spent two years there and Strong left for Texas, just before we were so wonderfully allowed to be an ACC member. If we had been in the ACC years earlier neither Coach P nor Strong would likely have left. Its the best complete conference in America.
Coach P definitely @#$%ed up. We Cardinal fans know he has made a mends. People make mistakes in life I am not one to judge against them, however if I were a Clemson fan I would probably use it to try to get under his skin. Its part of being a fan. Speaking for one Louisville fan I forgive Coach P leaving us, but Ill never forget. I truly believe he will be at Louisville til he retires, one our AD stuck his neck out to give him another final chance, and two we are competitive in the best conference.
I would wish you guys good luck but I am a Louisville homer first. So I will say I hope you win every game after Saturday.

You do realize that the first team O and D has only played 9 1/2 qtrs all season right? Doing the math if they were on the field for all 16 qtrs the avg total offense would be between 850-875 per game.
I have absolutely no doubt your D will not allow us to get to those numbers. Anyone that said differently would be a fool. But even if you slow us to 50% of average, which wont happen barring injury, it equates to 433 yards and 32 pts.
Debates are fun. We will see Saturday!!!

Glad you seem to think it won't happen. ..what D in the top 50, much less top 5, Jane you played yet? FYI, FSU was only #59 in Total D when you played them.

I admit and admitted your D is good. I said we would likely only get 400 yards and 32 points.because thats what the stats say. The only two teams you played in DV is South Carolina State and Troy. South Carolina St is a bad Div II team. You gave up 386 yds of total offense against Troy. If you are saying we are worst then Troy just say it. lol You will find out we arent Troy quickly I am pretty certain.
Not trying to come as an @ss but I am not gonna blow smoke either. In this game I am a Louisville fan!

You're going to be a sad little bird Sat night. I don't think we blow Louisville out but Clemson will control the game start to finish. Our boys live for these kind of games, you will see Clemson back in Championship form. The Tiger D will be more than ready and all the Louisville hype dies Sat night.

I am on your board and dont want to be disrespectful, I think you will be unpleasantly surprised in a LARGE way on Saturday however. Your O and D were better the last two years. You bet us by a total of 5. Hey look on the bright side you will be introduced to Lamar Jackson for the first time.
It will be fun!!!

This is this year I'm glad you're excited about getting beat 2 years in a row. So I guess 3 won't be so bad for you after all. We are Clemson and have worked hard to get to where we are at. The team is not going to let a program like Louisville take their spot . I can assure you the Cards are not fully expecting what's coming after them.

If UL would have played us in week 1 or week 2, then I would agree. We started so slow and sloppy that we would have got beat convincingly, especially considering how fast UL started. But, we are finally starting to get it together the last two weeks and we all know what this offense is capable of. If we can execute at a high level, Clemson can win this game, be sure of that.
UL has also never seen an atmosphere like they will see Saturday night. Probably not ever in the entire history of their program? Will the stage be too big? I don't know, maybe Jackson is like Winston and it wouln't phase him, but we don't know yet and it is a big factor. Some players rise to the occassion and some fold under the pressure. Watson will feel no pressure being at home and having been there, done that.
I admit, I would feel better about this game if it was played in another few weeks and we were in full rythm with Renfrow and Bryant back. And for that reason, I feal bad for FSU! Hopefully we are ready. Looking forward to tailgating with the great UL fans again!

You have an opportunity to mitigate the point barrage with special teams. I said it all week. Whether you guys believe it or not youre entire teams big issue is scoring enough to beat us. I honestly not coming here to #### you all off. We do what we do everyone we played since the last three games of last season. There is really no need to debate I recon. You will find out real quickly Saturday. Personally I like the Tigers and want you to win every game but Saturday.
If you guys are trying to convince me your D is anywhere near last year you are lying to be and fooling yourselves.

Actually, this time last year I don't believe our defense was anywhere near top 5 in five statistical categories. And knowing that we have played basically our worst ball, still remain undefeated, and unlike y'alls team, have spread the snaps out across the entire depth chart, this should be one heck of a matchup. If you look at stars alone, we outnumber you guys by a bunch in the 3-deep. Our QB is battle-tested and proven, not recently coming to his own. That drop-off you spoke of earlier in this thread between your 1st team and 2nd, 3rd, will absolutely become a factor in the second half of the game I believe. Im not sure if you've ever been to Death Valley either but it's very difficult to just waltz into our house and flex like you have been. It's loud, obnoxiously so. And all this media "underdog" this & that isn't assisting, but rather hurting y'all. You see, these Tigers, they have this thing about being respected. And I can't remember the last time we were underdogs at home under this leadership and with this level of talent! I hope to see your name on the forum on Sunday congratulating us and hunbly admitting that you've been bested.
GO TIGERS!
That being said, I do love me some Louisville football and Lamar Jackson. He has been fun to watch and no one here that knows and respects the game will say much negative about his game, perhaps his passing game. But he makes unbelievable cuts and is quite the showman. I'm really looking forward to Saturday night's showdown, as I can tell you are. I appreciate your demeanor & staying level-headed on an opponent's board also. Not everyone comes in and wipes their feet on the respective rug. Good luck to you. And

I have no problem eating crow if its deserved. I am just confident I wont be. LOL I am absolutely not saying that we will waltz in there and blow you out. To be clear I believe both teams will do what they have done. If that were to be the case Clemson will not score enough to win.
The question boils down to whether or not you believe Clemson can stop us from doing what we have been doing consistently since the last two games of last year. There is not any evidence to give any reason to believe Clemson can do enough. Thats not saying their defense is not a good one or me being boasting. Its a simple calculation on my part.
Go Cards!!!

Do what?? You don't believe there is any evidence we can stop what they've been doing?
OK, what does Lamar Jackson do best?? What's he been getting a majority of his scores from doing? Running/rushing, right? His pass attack has been mediocre, and only showed decent vs Marshall....a team that was ranked a measly, pathetic #126 of 128 in passing defense the Friday before they played Louisville: https://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/stat/opponent-passing-yards-per-game?date=2016-09-23 (Clemson at the same time was ranked #13 in Passing D....#9 now).
Many would agree our defense is looking better at this point this year than last year's....so, let's look at last year and this year so far to what actually matches up and matters. We got Baker Mayfield (-15 rush yds vs Clemson's D), We got Justin Thomas (3 yds vs Clemson 2015, -25 yds vs Clemson 2016), we got Marquise Williams (81 yds vs Clemson's D...best one the entire year and still didn't break 100 yds), Deshone Kiser (55 yds vs Clemson's D), Louisville's entire rushing attack 2015 (8 yds for Jackson, only 19 total yards vs Clemson's D), Jacoby Brisett (-2 yards vs Clemson's D), Jake Coker (-20 yds vs Clemson's D...though he's not a running QB), Jeremy Johnson (-18 yards vs Clemson's D 2016), Sean White (-2 yds vs Clemson's D 2016).
So exactly what QB whose strength is his rushing attack has had over 1oo yard success yet against Clemson's D?
Keep drinking that Kool-aid. You are obviously blind and wearing your blinding black glasses instead of your red ones.

Outside of SC State game, some of our defensive backups like JD Davis, Albert Higgins, Tre Lamar, Trayvon Mullen, Chris Register, K'Von Wallace, Jalen Williams and Richard Yeargin took more snaps in Troy game than any other games.

I've got a feeling we'll test that depth, but who breaks first? Our D or Louisville's? I wouldn't want to be the team chasing in this one.

Clemson has had 3 extra prep days, that is a HUGE advantage. You will see this offense click big time. U of L does not have the depth to withstand the force that will hit them.

If Watson keeps overthrowing his wide-open WR's, then we're in for a long day, and will probably lose this one. He will only have so many opportunities, and then we lose. He had better figure out how to do that. And the OLine had better protect him enough to allow the plays to develop.
It's going to be a battle only if we play our best.
