Let’s get something straight about Clemson and being a fan

Sep 16, 2018, 5:44 PM

While I am blessed to be an alumni, my parents and brother are not. My father grew up in western Pennsylvania, but became a Tiger fan(and of the state of South Carolina in general) in late 70’s while being stationed at the naval base in Charleston. My brother has been an IPTAY donor since 2001.

Like I said, I was blessed to go to Clemson straight out of high school. The first male in my family to do so. (Somehow my sister ended up at school of the 1969 ACC champs, a decision she openly regrets.) But it sets my blood to boiling when you blue blooded arrogant ######## belittle fans who didn’t attend or graduate.

For starters, Clemson is a public university of the state of South Carolina. Whether you admit it or not, every tax payer in South Carolina helped fund your education. As far as I’m concerned we all owe a debt of gratitude to the people of this state for subsidizing our education. We are the privileged.

Clemson is a university of the people for the people. Take the entitled/country club BS somewhere else. If you really need to feel validated by being part of a special/elite group, go get some #### counseling.

Clemson University exists because of its strong fan base

Sep 16, 2018, 7:35 PM

And I am not necessarily referring to the athletic programs. Being a land grant college, Clemson was formed to help the population of South Carolina in many areas. As you are aware, in the early years of Clemson A&M college the textile and agriculture industries of the state flourished and the college was instrumental in the growth and development of those two major industries. A large portion of the population depended on those two industries for their livelihood and they certainly identified with the college that helped them in many ways. As I have said before, that is also how IPTAY became established. It almost solely depended on these ‘fans’ of Clemson College to help begin what is now America’s most successful athletic fund raising organization. (When ten dollars was a lot of money). If you worked in a textile plant as a loom fixer or in the fields raising peaches or cotton, you were a part of Clemson! Times have certainly changed and Clemson University has changed with those times. But the dependence of the fan base hasn’t changed and it is still an integral part of the university that we all call our own. If you are a Clemson alum you have reason to be proud and I congratulate you all. If you are a fan of the university, I congratulate you as well. The Tigers would not exists without all of us. I often encourage all you guys to support Clemson in addition to being a fan. Clemson University is not what it is today with the support of thousands of alumni .... and fans.

It’s easy for those of us fortunate enough to be Clemson men to feel a little special at times because most of you, like me, busted your butt to get that sheepskin that proudly hangs in your home or office. We are all fortunate to have Clemson to call our own.

Agree with that but there will always be bandwagon fans when a team does good sadly. It does make it so much better to remember back when a 9 wins season was awesome, being in the top 25 was amazing, beating a top 10 team was crazy, winning a bowl game on Dec 20-29 was great, making it to the ACC Championship was unreal, and winning the peach bowl was like the feeling of winning it all.

Webster’s dictionary defines an alumnus as “a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university”.
So, although I never graduated from Clemson, I did attend Clemson for one year. By definition, I am an alum but, I won’t claim that status because I didn’t graduate. It just doesn’t seem right to do so to me

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One point that I often find to be true that folks may disagree with:

Sep 16, 2018, 8:32 PM

Graduates/alumni tend to pull for Clemson University. Fans tend to pull for Clemson sports. I don't place a value on that, its just a difference. While its awesome that Dabo is a winner on and off the field, I would take that guy as our coach if he averaged 32 wins for every 4 years class. Its more important to me that we have the right leader than just a winner. I'm not sure the Clemson sports fan feels the same, nor can I say with certainty that I speak even for a majority of alumni for that matter.

Nice downtime topic! Thanks for posting! Where's hill watch?

I pull for Clemson in everything. I grew up a Clemson fan my whole life I'm thirty now. My dad always loved Clemson. He didn't go to college. He was a farmer his whole life until he was 30. I've had several ppl, friends and family, go to Clemson. I went to florence-darlington tech for civil engineering with plans to transfer to Clemson after I graduated. I graduated and decided I was tired of going to school and got a job with the railroad. My point is, I may regret that decision , but that does not change the love I have and have always had for Clemson university. I am a diehard fan of Clemson university, not Clemson football or whatever sport. I want Clemson university to accel in whatever. And one day, I hope my daughter will be able to attend Clemson. Nothing would make me happier. Go tigers!

Being an alum doesn’t dictate how much of a fan one can be.

Sep 17, 2018, 7:33 PM

But being an alum gives an additional level of significance to Clemson athletics that non-alums can’t understand.

As a non alum I can see where alums did have the whole Clemson U. experience living on campus and in Clemson and doing the whole college thing including all the sports and I know I can't have those ties or memories but I love everything Clemson and have since 1975. I care about Clemson in every way and am proud of their national rankings in every category. I have also been instrumental in a lot of family members becoming Clemson Tiger fans and some even alums. We can all be proud humble Die hard Clemson fans.
