Syracuse will pay the Big East $7.5 million to terminate its membership and move to the Atlantic Coast Conference, effective July 1, 2013, Big East officials announced today.

Syracuse and Pitt announced plans last September to leave the Big East for the ACC. At the time, the Big East was demanding a $5 million exit fee and a 27-month waiting period as departure conditions.

Asked earlier this year whether Pitt would pay more than the $5 million to leave the conference, Pederson answered emphatically, “No.”

“Above everything else, we have to protect the interests of this institution,” he said.

The Big East had no comment on how Syracuse’s departure might affect Pitt’s situation. Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson also had no immediate comment.

Pitt filed a lawsuit against the Big East on May 11 in Allegheny County Court in an attempt to leave the conference after the 2012-2013 academic year. In the lawsuit, which has since been moved to federal court and has yet to be heard, Pitt maintained the Big East relinquished its waiting period for departing members by not holding West Virginia and TCU to the standard when they announced last year they were leaving the conference.

West Virginia paid $20 million to leave the Big East and join the Big 12 Conference this year. TCU backed out of its agreement to join the Big East and opted for immediate Big 12 membership. The Big East sued TCU last month for its $5 million exit fee.

At least our basketball conference just got tougher. wee.

It'll be great for our conference if the ACC can continue laying stake in the North East market. So far, this makes New England & New York.

If we could snag Pitt and Rutgers to give us Jersey & some of Pennsylvania, our conference could have some serious clout. Imagine an ACC that stretches from the southern tip of Fla (Miami) all the way through Massachusetts? that would REALLY be an Atlantic Coast Conference. Some of the quality recruits the Big 10 poaches from that area might instead have a reason to stay home or go to an ACC school instead. IMO there's enough recruiting talent here to virtually rival the SEC; we just need to give it a reason to not go elsewhere.

We'd need one more team to make it an even 16 though. Notre Dame and its Indiana/Ohio/Illinois/Michigan/Wisconsin market would be amazing.... or perhaps grab Marshall which would give recruits from WV, southern PA, and nearby Ohio & KY a reason to go to an ACC school. Plus, with WVU now being in a conference so far away from home, I could see Marshall stealing recruits who want to remain closer to it.

the ### whipping put on the Tigers was worse than the WVU Orange Bowl.

It was a cold, wet miserable day in JAX. I would like payback.
