Sounds like we need to fire someone....or some group of people.

What about conference records for those years?

Jun 3, 2014, 10:51 AM

I think he's had 11 double-digit loss seasons, eight since 2006. I realize the conference has expanded which may be a factor. In that case winning pct. should be considered.

I know of at least 2 times at the CWS we were hands down the best team in the nation. Different coaches over the last 20 years and Clemson would have a NC.

Your subject line has a double meaning - both appropriate***

Keep in mind teams are playing fewer games

Jun 3, 2014, 11:05 AM

the uniform start date started in 06 or 08 and they ended all those exemptions for early season tournaments. I think the average team scheduled about 5-8 fewer games per season since mid 00s. The CWS champion doesn't play but around 65-70 games now. I can remember teams in the mid-90s playing 70+ and not even making it to Omaha. I know we WON 60 games one year and didn't make it out of the regionals.

To get that high now you have to play a bunch of games in losers brackets of tournaments. We play fewer games with this stupid round robin ACC tournament format.

But the slide is still noticeable.

very good point but --please--let's not cloud the subject

with logic and facts---please

From looking at the numbers I believe that JL 1st season is the only one in which the regular season was more than 56 games

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think its a little later than that but not so much

Jun 3, 2014, 11:37 AM

that changes the trend. It might make the difference in a half game per year or so. And you have to think that those first 4 years are more of an aberration. It seems like the measure for a "great" college season has dropped from 50 wins to 40 wins since the uniform start date.

And you are right in that you rack up a bunch of wins/games played in tournaments...which we aren't advancing all that far in recently. And ironically you really really rack up the wins if you come out of the losers bracket.

If you have the numbers handy, it would be interesting to see what our regular season wins have been over those years (count the ACC tournament).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ok instead of average wins how about winning % since it

Jun 3, 2014, 11:46 AM [ in reply to Keep in mind teams are playing fewer games ]

fits your argument better....

1994-1998 – 246 – 88 (73.6%)
1999-2002 – 188 – 84 (69.1%)
2003-2006 – 174 – 87 (66.7%)
2007-2010 – 161 – 97 (62.4%)
2011-2014 – 154 – 95 (61.8%)

"Clemson has been historically better than Carolina. That's pretty obvious." - Classof09

"No one knew we were overhyped until the season started." - Classof09

If you take out that lucky run in 10

Jun 3, 2014, 1:38 PM

the numbers would look even worse. That run probably got Jack 3 or 4 more years. If you take that blip out, the slide started in 07 or 08.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're winning less because we're playing less

Jun 3, 2014, 12:44 PM [ in reply to Keep in mind teams are playing fewer games ]

When you are 2 and out in a regional, don't make the Supers or Omaha, you're bound to win less. The quality of the on-field product has greatly diminishes and even Stevie Wonder can see that. All the best to Jack as he pursues other interests.

Corbin left after 2002 and was replaced by Tom Riginos. Major drop-off, but we still had Sully. Sully left after 2007 and was replaced by Bunn. Another major drop-off. In each instance, Coach Leggett was told you can only spend $x on a new coach. Find someone that will come for that salary, which is considerably lower than what most top baseball programs pay. Tanner was always told to find the best guy, money didn't matter.

Compare asst salaries

Jerry Meyers - $180,000
Pep - $132,613

Sam Espisito - $ 125,000
LeCroy - $116,699

Think we could use an extra $55,000 to attract better candidates. Not that I am against LeCroy, but the Pep hire cam out of leftfield.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

pep isn't earning his wage.***

Dabo should send Jack some money for his coaches.***
