Least favorite place to watch the Tigers?
Jun 23, 2013, 5:54 PM
|
|
I was thinking about how fortunate we were to get GT at home again, and it raised the question: "Where do you LEAST look forward to seeing Clemson play?"
I tried to come up with a list based on factors like stadium atmosphere, hostility of opposing fans, outcome of games (How close, bad losses, etc.) I also took personal experiences of my own into account.
Since I have only seen 3 games at Sanford and none of them were against Clemson, I had to leave them at 5
1. Bobby Dodd 2. Billy Brice 3. Byrd Stadium 4. Doak Campbell 5. Sanford Stadium
Who ya got???

I'd have that one up there too. I haven't been there since the late 80's, but that was the worst group of fans I've been around by far.

Tied between Sanford and the Doak

I've been p1ssed on at Sanford. Literally, Jawjuh fans stand at the railing of the upper deck portions that are over the visiting fans section and #### onto the opposing teams fans from the upper deck. It isn't like 1 or 2 numbskulls either. Its more like whenever a leghumper decides he needs to drain the main vein instead of walking to the bathroom like civilized people, they just walk to the railing and let it rip into the crowd. I was 10 when it happened to me, I was with a friends family (all Auburn fans, so we went to UGAy to see Auburn there). We left during the 3rd quarter because we couldn't take getting pissed on. Security did nothing to stop it. My roommate saw them doing it last year when he went to a Jawjuh home game, so apparently that tradition still stands.
I went to FSU with the band this past year. Doak Campbell was junk. The outside is brick and the inside around the concessions and bathroom areas is nothing but aluminum scaffolding. The actual seating is nothing but aluminum benches on a metal platform. The steps you walk down, which is what the benches are bolted onto, are all metal. Feels like you are walking on a tin roof. The spot where I had to sit had a massive hole rusted through where my feet would be if I were standing up. The hole was about 8" in diameter and I could see all the way to the foundation. My water bottle fell through there.... It was alright though because the FSU fans replenished our beverage situation by hurling unopened beer cans at the band.
Everywhere else just sort of falls into place after this.

I would rather go to any stadium 50 times than Maryland once

I certainly despise Scar fans more, but Maryland fans are barely a step above neanderthal. We went there several years ago and I witnessed:
1. Cars with Clemson flags being urinated on. 2. Being hit with large chunks of ice (not cubes). 3. A seven or eight year old kid being hit in the back with a can of beer (at least partially full judging by what came out when it hit the ground). 4. An old man in a wheelchair talking about my mother. 5. While leaving the stadium, the fans rocking our car back and forth in true riot fashion. 6. Untold numbers of threats and attempts to start a fight.
It is the only place I have ever been to where I legitimately feared for my life by the end of the night. I despise that place with the fury that burns like a thousand suns.

Maryland fans were the WORST by a country mile.
I was in Tiger Band when we played them in the "Coaches in the Booth" game at the old Baltimore Memorial Stadium. They wound up winning the game, but a couple of their fans threw a huge piece of turf and hit us in the head as we were loading up the equipment truck. And of course we received quite a verbal assault too. They actually won that game...can't imagine what they would have done if WE had won.
And jj1492, I would have gone full Ninja on the guy in the wheelchair!

Although since we've gone 9-1 against the Wuffies and Clamato's influence has waned, folks have been considerably less hostile up there.

1. Cockroach 2. Booby Dodd 3. Doak Campbell - pretty from outside, you get inside, and you sit a mile away because it is only a single lower bowl with a shallow angle. I'm 1-1 there 4. Kenan - lost to those aholes when I was in med school there. That day sucked. 5. Duke - not bad from a hostile fan perspective, but from an atmosphere perspective, it was just pitiful. it was a noon game. Felt like some of my middle school soccer games.
I went to 3 or 4 games at Carter-Finley when I was in Med School at UNC. Two were Clemson, two FSU (my wife is an FSU grad). We won all 4. Fans were stupid before the game, but gone by the end. There wasn't much talk after. Sucking has humbled them.
I kinda wish I could go back to Kenan after all this Academic Fraud and ScapeGoating Butch. All that crap blew up right after I left the esteemed institution.

1. Sanford 2. Wallace Wade 3. Bobby Dodd 4. Gator Bowl - bad memories 5. Williams Brice - only been twice and in the band, and I'm not particularly intimidated by it or anything...I just hate it on principle. I don't really ever want to go back.

My list
Jun 24, 2013, 12:25 AM

1. Sanford 2. Byrd 3. Williams Brice 4. Carter Finley 5. Scott Stadium
#5 is simply because of the total lack of atmosphere. Everywhere else is because the home fans are total douchebags
