Anyone have strong opinions on a home security system?

May 23, 2012, 8:56 AM

Other than a gun?

Looking at all kinds of companies. Kind of settling in on either a DIY like Frontpoint (which gets universally good reviews) or AVSX/Vector.

If you have any good/bad experiences with any in particular, let me know.

May 23, 2012, 9:57 AM

But you should drop the "other than a gun" mentality.

Police are for writing reports after the damage is done. If you are waiting on them to come save you, you WILL be a victim. Ask the folks in B-L how well govt funded emergency response works out (18 minutes after the murder suicide yesterday). Seriously- get a gun and practice. If you don't protect yourself and your loved ones, you're signing up to be a victim- you have a choice.

A good security system can be all the difference in the world in keeping someone from breaking into your home and leaving a Dave Matthews CD in your CD player!!!

dandy to have an alarm system, visual deterrants and common sense are the best form of home security.

Pro Tips:
*Get some signs that say you have an alarm system. These are easily stolen from people's homes that have actual alarms. Don't worry, the yard is usually not wired.
*Get stickers indicating that you have an alarm system and put them on your ground floor windows. I'm pretty sure you can get these at Home D or Lowe's. If not find 'em online.
*Leave a TV and a lamp on when at home. TV volume should be up a bit. You know, to make 'em think you are in there with your gun watching the tube.
*Lock your doors when you aren't at home. T-mail me if any questions on this one.
*As for locks: Have a dead bolt lock on your doors as well. Don't leave a key in them on the inside cuz the boogie man will just bust the window and give your door a real good reach-around.
*Keep bushes/shrubs near your house trimmed so booglers can't hide out. Remember booglers prefer bushy to trimmed or shaved.
*Install motion detector flood lights outside your house. That light alone is enough to keep most meth heads out of your house. The guy next door without these types of lights is a much more attractive target(but not in a TXTF kind of way).
*Keep your windows locked. Or else someone will open them and climb in. Duh.
*Install a stick (heavy duty) in your sliding glass doors. Otherwise all a perp has to do is break the window.

Alarm or no alarm somebody's gonna get in if they want to. Most boogerlaries happen when access is easy and there is no apparent deterrant. Sort of like how girls in tight miniskirts at the club tend to go home and throw leg.
