How did we get so Good all of a sudden?

Dec 7, 2017, 1:16 PM

When I was a student, we were happy with a 8 or 9 win season. Tommy Bowden was at the helm and we played the likes of Kentucky and South Florida in bowl games. We tore down goal posts when we beat Florida State. I just wish we were this good when I was a student. These current students don't know how good they got it!

Does anyone remember Hootie Ingram and Red Parker? UGH!!!!

Re: You were lucky

Dec 7, 2017, 3:10 PM

Sure do

I was there

Up the middle, up the middle, pass, punt offense

but Red changed that from Hootie

Red also got screwed but he laid the foundation for our first NC

I was at Clemson for Howard's last year, 3 of Hootie (dont forget Hootie would go run, run, punt on 3rd down so we vould play defense) and Red Parker's first year. 5, count 'em, 5 losing seasons! Stayed around to see what Red could do in '73 and it was exciting. '74 was even better and Red's recruiting after that season set the stage for Clemson's surge.

Just glad Hootie got us the Paw and we didn't name the other end zone after him instead of Tommy West.

years. Playing ANYBODY in a bowl game would have been euphoric back then. 1974 for example, had our one winning season during that time, went 7-4 and put out a special commemorative Pepsi bottle. I wish I still had mine, got fried in a house fire in 1977.

Ha! Me too. Clemson slaughtered UNC that year and the Tarholes got the bowl invite over us. They lost to Mississippi State in the Sun Bowl. They done got sun burned. :)

Same here. Graduated in 91. Got to experience our last ACC Championship for a long time, and saw some great bowl games - particularly wins over Paterno and Penn St and Switzer at Oklahoma. I graduated Dec 91, we lost our bowl game to Cal later that month, and it was all downhill from there until the 2000s.

Great to see how well Dabo has done with our program, recruiting, and general outstanding leadership!

Agree that they were great bowl wins and what happened afterward

Started obviously with Dabo, but then the 2010 Tire Bowl.

Dec 7, 2017, 1:36 PM

Tajh at the end of that game showed great promise for the future. Four losses the next year, including the WVU debacle, which brought us BV, Two losses each of the next two seasons with Boyd, followed by 2-1-1 and a championship with Watson at the helm. Improved recruiting, coaching, and effort have got us to an AWESOME position of competing for the championship again in a "rebuilding" year. This year it's defense leading the way. Just great times to be a Tiger!

If you ask Chad Morris it's all thanks to him.

Without Chad gracing our campus we would be looking at 6 wins every year and would probably be running non stop bubble screens and QB keepers out of shotgun.

Not all of a sudden. We’ve been working on this since

at least 99. It’s been a process that began (arguably) with Bowden after the West years. Sure there have been several hiccups along the way but TB really put us on the upswing and gave us Dabo. It takes time to build a program like we have now.

From an outsider's perspective, I felt like the last second FG win over LSU in the Peach (I'll never call it the Chick fil a bowl), was the beginning of the ascendancy of your Tigers.

I also thought that once Jameis Winston left FSU, Jimbo would take the backseat to Clemson in the years to come.

I'm not right about a lot of things, but I called those two correctly.
