Kicked ball against the offense?

Dec 16, 2017, 6:05 PM

I've coached high school basketball for 12 years and I have never seen a kicked ball called against the offense. I don't have the rule in front of me but it's always been my understanding that the offense can only be called for a kicked ball if it is intentionally kicked.

i thought so too... had to be intentional

and on the reply it looked like it hit DeVoe's shin, not his shoe

Kicking the ball Is a violation regardless of who does it.

If that is the rule, why do they not stop play when someone dribbles the ball off his foot and it gets picked up by a teammate?

Because that is not the rule, and anybody that ever played

Yes. But the thing is that it wasn’t kicked.

My playing days are pretty far in the rear view mirror

but i recall the same as you - thought it had to be an intentional kick on the offense to get called.

One of their guys caught the ball on his hip on a dribble

and they did not call it....

The rules classify intentional kicking of the ball as a violation resulting in a dead ball and a stoppage in play. Conversely, a ball that accidentally strikes a player’s foot is not a violation and does not result in a stoppage in play unless the ball goes out of bounds.

If an offensive player intentionally kicks the basketball, the ball is awarded to the defensive team out of bounds for a throw-in. If a defensive player intentionally kicks the basketball while it is in play, the offensive team retains possession of the ball and receives it out of bounds for a throw-in. If a defensive player intentionally kicks the basketball during a throw-in, the offensive team retains possession of the ball and receives it out of bounds at the spot of the original throw-in.

As an official, my eyes, through the benefit of seeing the replay, say that the calling official missed that one.

The Tigers not only had to beat Florida, they had to beat

the refs. Several ticky tac fouls called against the Tigers, plus the pt. taken off the board. plus the "kicked ball", plus a couple of times the Gators went on the floor and were awarded the ball, even though not touched by Tigers. GO TIGERS! SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS, just the opposite of last year.
