Do the *'s make the team or does the team make the *'s

looking back

2008 recruiting class
2. Clemson
10 ESPN 150 prospects
This year's surprise class closed with a bang down the stretch on signing day with signatures from No. 6 offensive tackle Antoine McClain (Anniston, Ala.), No. 3 tight end Dwayne Allen (Fayetteville, S.C./Terry Sanford) and No. 3 running back Jamie Harper (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian). This was all while ESPN's No. 1-rated overall prospect DaQuan Bowers (Bamberg, S.C./Bamberg-Ehrhardt) was already hitting the books on Clemson's campus with No. 4-rated quarterback Kyle Parker (Jacksonville, Fla./Bartram Trail).

I would say the Team make's the * (stars) ie Coaches & other players
Over the years we have see 3* players come to Clemson then play many years in the NFL
The NFL has had 5* players comming out of High School get cut after just a few years
A player with a big heart and want to, most of the time will out play a 5* player who has little desire
Would Sammy or Nuk be as good as they are if we had a QB who could not get them the ball or an OL who could not block

While I believe a highly-ranked recruit can make an impact,

Feb 11, 2013, 7:19 AM

I have long held to the belief that the key to success for any program is in the motivation, training and discipline instilled by the staff. I believe that premise, also, applies to most any organization, for the most successful generally have dynamic, highly-capable leaders.

Thus, I never worry much about ratings of recruits, but, moreso, the ability of our staff to "coach up" the entire team...the entire team, of course, required for success. The obvious benefit from a well-performing, highly-rated recruit is in the motivation he can instill in the other team members. Yet, there are numerous examples of well-performing, lower-rated recruits doing the same...think Johnny Football, Heisman or whatever you want to call him. And that leads directly back to the responsibilities of the staff.

it's more about player development. And antler spray of course.
