To me that's just coach speak. At a minimum the television networks use those rankings to drum up interest in the games.

I see no point in ranking until late in the season, as the committee does. Coach Bill Parcells used to say that you start to get a sense of who you are as a team at about the half way point of the season. I agree with that, and as such, see no point in ranking early. I think the CFP committee has got it right.

Until week six. By that point many teams have had their bye week and everyone has started conference play.

It’s not that far-fetched. The CFP rankings don’t come out until what, week 8 or so? Those are the only ones that matter anyway, and once they come out all the networks switch over to using those rankings as opposed to the AP/Coaches rankings.

Think about it...do we really need a poll to tell us we’ve got two good teams playing in Death Valley this weekend? Maybe for the casual college football fan but definitely not to everyone else.

Take this example from last year....Bama goes into LSU and wins 29-0 over the then “third” ranked LSU Tigers. By default, if you’re the third-ranked anything, there should only be two people/teams/etc better than you. Was there EVER a time last year when only two teams were better than LSU? Not at all. They were inept offensively for most of the year.

Let the teams play half a season or so then start to rank them. I bet you’ll find it won’t hurt the number of viewers at all!

Agree that is a good idea, but you will never stop all the different outlets from ranking teams early in the season. Unless we all agree to turn off the internet until mid-season. :)

this isn't even debatable. The ap and coach polls are nothing more than rating generators now.
