You're on to something. It's a small piece to a larger puzzle.
The "average" South Carolina fan has no clue where that program has been. I.E. they're unaware they are tied for 94th in all-time wins and have ZERO Conference Championships (outright) in their history in spite of playing football since 1892. Most are clueless that their one co- ACC Championship is with Maryland from 1969 with both teams sporting 7-4 records.
According to the law of averages......how is this level of ineptitude even possible one might ask?
Mention any of those facts to the average South Carolina fan and you get the "deer in the headlights look".
They fail to succeed because their fans don't realize who they "ACTUALLy" are as a program. They're too busy being delusional, pretending that they're competing with Clemson, UGA, FL, FSU, 'Bama, etc...when if you look at the facts they've always been a bottom tier college football programs with teams like UK & Vandy.

I think the South Carolina Wikipedia website's info. is inaccurate. My memory is pretty photographic and I committed this to memory the first time I saw it. I can't vouch for MD's Wikipedia either, so.....lol. But, I'm fairly certain 7-4 co-champs is what we're talking about.
Yeah, doubt they complained in 1969.

I looked at both. Neither of them say Maryland won the ACC in 1969. In fact, 1969 is not even mentioned, at all, on the entire Wikipedia page.
