The "Death" of Death Valley...
Oct 9, 2018, 12:54 PM
|

Ok folks. I'm curious as to what you all think about the future of Death Valley. As we've seen in the last several years, our Tigers have developed into a team that has defeated Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Texas A&M, Auburn, etc.. Iptay contributions and season ticket sales have been at an all time high while decent parking and seating is now worth their weight in gold.
Do any of you feel that Clemson will ever have a stadium with a seating capacity over 100k?
Do any of you feel that fans will accept a new stadium built off campus while loosing the 76+ year history of memorial stadium? Perhaps build a new stadium that will still have the hill and Howard's rock.

If Clemson can build the Laser and develop Puffed Wheat, surely they can build a dome over the valley with suspended anti gravity seating. No sweat! Think of the noise the crowd would make!

level to the stadium. Can you say upper, upper deck? Yep, two upper decks is the new trend in college stadiums.
I'm thinking there could be some ginormous slides to the field for post game celebrations/hasty emergency exit.
You're welcome.

We don't have a large enough student body and alumni base to fill that big of a stadium. We are half as big or less of the schools that have stadiums that large. Not to mention the small population in the immediate area of Clemson.

...a hologram system for Littlejohn. Overflow seating will be in the coliseum. You'll be able to see the game much better albeit scaled down to fit the floor. The good new is they'll have all you can drink Natural Lite beer included in the ticket price.

We cant fill the stadium we have now except for the 1 or 2 big games a year.
We dont have anywhere else to park people even if we did build a bigger stadium
The trend now is for smaller stadiums with premium seats and more fan amenities, the competition with 50 zillion games on TV is real.
enough said.

I agree, although the only change I'd like to see is closing in the east end zone some, would make it even louder and would only add 2/3000 more seats. I think we should be pretty proud of how much we fill out our stadium each year.

It's coming. From what I've heard an East Endzone Expansion feasibility study is being presented to the BoT this month.
Obviously, we're still a few years out from having an actual design and starting construction, but if they approve the action, they will start looking into options for the east endzone.
I have some concern about the ability to fill more seats, but a few more National Championships should help solve that issue. I assume anything they would build would be mostly premium seats similar to the WEZ and South Club.

If you are talking about the students then yes, they show up for big games but all other games they leave at the half and don’t come back.

Perhaps DV will grow to seat a hundred thou someday. Right now the corners are empty because it's more economical to raise the cost of tickets until some don't sell. That sounds crazy but it's sound economic policy which generates more money that filling a venue with lower rates.
Perhaps when the price of ticket max out additions to the seating will expand. Imo, this depends on variables which can't be determined such as, win/loss records, coaching changes and administration changes. Then there's IPTAY, who knows what Dabo is cooking up with IPTAY?
Imo, there's no predictor for if or when it may happen.

DV will grow with the population of the upstate unless we see a negative inflection point in the growth of the popularity of college football. It will always be on-campus. Dollars will find parking. I can see 100k, but the 100k club will be bigger than it is now. FYI, a few years ago, we were 2nd in ratio of stadium size / student body size behind Notre Dame. Folks, that is pretty cool.

downsize. A 100,000 stadium is actually giving away tickets for 70% of their games and most people just aren't willing to sit in the nose bleeds for the expense when they can watch at home.
Death Valley might add a feature to the East End some day, but that will be to accomodate more luxury seats and to provide additional shade.

Memorial Stadium did not originally have upper decks. I believe the West End zone was added later, but I know with a certainty that it was separate from the North and South stands.
My point is that Our stadium has evolved to what we have today. I imagine that it will continue to evolve in the near future. I don't think it will move.

I’m not a fan of how our stadium has evolved through its various expansions and I wish we could turn back the clock and do a better job ... but there is no way to do that and there’s no way that a new stadium will be considered in any of our lifetimes.
It’s just not gonna happen.
