african-american college player ever to tee it up in DV. Back in those days, there were always af-am folks who worked on campus standing on the (then) undeveloped slope between the South Stands and what is now the West End Zone. EVERYONE who grew up in Clemson knew some of the folks standing in that area---some were undoubtedly ancestrally related to Terry Smith and Nuk Hopkins.

And, of course, the legendary Herman McGee---one of the finest human beings I've ever known---patrolled the sidelines keeping Clemson players taped up and their equipment repaired.

Those days seem so far away now---but I remember them like they were yesterday.

Not as scary as playing in Columbia. SCAR fans screamed so many racial epithets and were so over top that Maryland was the biggest opponent to SCAR's re-entry bid to the ACC in the mid-70s as a result.
