The ball has to be across half court. Only his foot went behind the line.

Must have both feet AND the ball across before you're established in the front court

THe way the rule is written, all three things need to be across the half court line . . .both feet and the ball. If one of those is still in the backcourt, you are not considered across the line.

his left foot back across. It was definitely backcourt, unless they have recently changed the rule from what it used to be. It was pretty obvious, so it surprised me it wasn't called!

I think you're right. He had both feet in the front court and stepped back. O well. Worked out for us
