Went north to see the Northern Lights and froze my nuts off

Apr 3, 2019, 7:53 AM

So the wife and I decided to try and see the Northern Lights for our 10th Anniversary. After much debate and a favorable exchange rate, we settled on Yellowknife, NT. To get there it's a 3 flight trip from Atlanta (ATL -> MSP -> YYC -> YZF). She booked a plywood, off the grid, floating shack on Great Slave Lake just outside of town. Power is solar, water is pumped directly from the lake, toilet is composting, heat is propane. Power is limited to a pair of LED lights and charging cameras or phones. No TV, laptops, etc. Showers are limited to 5 minutes a day to save power and heat. It's meager living, but you're away from the city and the hoards of smoking, Asian tourists. Plus, it makes walking out on the lake at any time of the night to see the lights easy. We rented Arctic rated jackets, pants, boots, etc. It was rated to -100 and saved our #####.

We came to see the see the lights, and Yellowknife put on a #### show.

Me, controlling the universe

This was our duplex. We stayed in the front half. It's Mo's Houseboat if anyone is interested.

Inside accommodations

Canadian Rape Van

Old town Yellowknife

What the lake looks like where there is no snow cover

While we were there was the Ice King Festival. They build a ridiculous castle each year and have comics, shows, etc, at night.

One of my favorite pics from Yellowknife. Ironically no lights.

After freezing our ##### off in Yellowknife (most nights were -25 to -30+ wind chill and -12 to -18 true temp) we headed to Rimrock in Banff. It's outside of town tucked way up on the mountain side.

Room view. Town of Banff down to the left.

The last few days we took the 1 up north toward Lake Louise/Jasper and saw what we could see.

And lastly, we saw a whole bunch of lunatics back country skiing

Ironically, that's the 2nd best room you can get.

Panoramic Valley view. It's from the 2nd highest floor as well. The suites at the end were the next room up.

I hope it was worth it.

A desert woman will put a rattlesnake in your boots every time, so tread lightly, cowboy.

It was cold AF, but not bad when dressed properly...

Apr 3, 2019, 8:55 AM [ in reply to Looks cold af, wood dew. And I'll never get to do it, ]

In Yellowknife at night I typically wore long johns, jeans, arctic pants, wool socks with arctic boots, and then a long sleeve shirt, hoodie, and arctic jacket. Face was covered with a balaclava and then a wool hat.

Interesting phenomenon was the moisture in the breath when you exhaled would go across your face and create little balls of ice on your eyelashes. When you went back inside the ice would start to melt and as you blinked they would stick to the ice on the other half your eyelashes causing your eyelids to stick closed.

I have to go to Calgary once a year and it’s never when the lights make it that far south. Looks like an awesome trip.

Re: jelly.....the NL are on my bucket list

Apr 3, 2019, 11:09 AM

It's only another 2-1/2 hour flight north to YZF. Town is chill and the pubs and brewery there have great food. Houseboat rent is cheap too. If you're already that close...

You do need to go back to Banff in the summer though... it is beautiful. The lakes have an electric color to them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here are my pics from our first Banff to Jasper trip...

Apr 3, 2019, 11:05 AM

We went to Banff and Jasper 8 or 9 years ago. Stayed in Canmore and then drove up to Jasper and spent a few days there, then back down to Banff and a few more days there.

Tried to recreate this shot I have of Peyto Lake:

This is the best lake, Moraine Lake. I really, really wanted to get a winter shot but it's closed during the winter due to avalanches.

That was the all time best post on Tnet. That was amazing. How much did it cost to do all of that?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Went north to see the Northern Lights and froze my nuts off

Apr 3, 2019, 6:03 PM

Probably 5-6K without the airfare to Calgary. We used Delta miles to fly from Atlanta to Calgary. The flights from Calgary to Yellowknife we had to buy. You can knock $1,000 off that if you don't want a rental car in either place.
