Buddy is a college ref

Live in Florida and have a ton of a$$hat FSU fan friends crying this AM.

The "below the waist" call has them in meltdown but only because they don't know the rule.
The block is textbook illegal under part 2. The blocker must be between 10 and 2. The FSU running back comes from somewhere closer to 5 o'clock.

JImbo is wrong. Sour grapes turned to whine is very unmanly. Take your lumps and man up. A lot of these gentlemen could take lessons from our "head cheerleader" on winning and losing like men

Good post. I had assumed it was a bad call too but now...

I reconsider.

I knew that was an illegal block just because I've watched a million hours of football. Just didn't look right

Jimbo was correct, not wrong.

It was not a "chop block", and he is correct in stating that.

"a chop block is an attempt by an offensive player to cut block (block at the thigh level or lower) a defensive player while the defender is already engaged by another offensive player. The chop block is usually considered illegal and penalized by a loss of 15-yards due to the injury risk it presents to the defender."

The block IS illegal, however, due to rule changes initiated in 2013...

"An illegal crack-back block is a block below the waist. Players outside the tackle box (more than seven yards out) or a player in motion cannot block another player below the waist until after the ball is snapped and significant time has run off the clock. After time has run off the clock, any player may be blocked below the waist as long as the blocking player is in front of the player being blocked or is within a 10 o’clock to 2 o’clock zone."

So, the block was illegal, but it was called incorrectly by the ref.

ref didn't call a chop block.

Oct 30, 2016, 12:41 PM

He called blocking below the waist, and he made the signal for blocking below the waist, so it was called correctly too.

My recording cut off 1 minute before the block, and I wasn't able to watch it live. I look forward to the replay on ESPNU tonight. If Jimbo didn't even know what the ref was calling and went on that tirade during and after the game, then he's a complete idiot who hurt his own team's chances.

I'm assuming he's just calling a block below the waist a 'chop block' (as many other people are wrongly doing) and not actually thinking they called a real chop block, because that would indeed be outrageous since it requires 2 blockers. But I wonder, because he also complained in his rant that they're supposed to mark the penalty from the spot of the foul and not from line of scrimmage. They did mark from the spot of foul, making it 1st and 16, then tacked on half the distance to goal for the unsportsmanlike penalty, which is what made it 1st and 25, so Jimbo seems pretty clueless.

True dat.

you and Jimbo are wrong

Oct 30, 2016, 12:51 PM [ in reply to Re: Buddy is a college ref ]

Again, the ref called "blocking below the waist". Under the rules this was a textbook case not only of an illegal block, but one that directly impacted the play. It is frequently called and is a focus because of all the ACLS that get blown out in this sport.

The beauty of it really lies in the fact that his IGNORANCE caused his eye bulging meltdown which ended up costing them an additional 15yds. Perfect.

Yep....you nailed it!******

The ref didn't call it a chop block, he called it an illegal block below the waist.

Spoke to a church friend who is an ACC official about Fisher's reactions and post - game rant. Jimbo can expect a significant fall out from the conference. His remarks did not sit well with either the officials or the ACC. He will be finded a considerable amount.

Go Tigers!

It used to be call Clipping

Oct 30, 2016, 12:34 PM

I haven't seen that called in 20 years though.

Sort of like "pushing" is still against the rules, but it hasn't been called since I was an undergrad.

68 years of watching football I have NEVER seen a coach bellyache over EVERYTHING. Refs, his players, his coaches, penalties which were obvious to the sight etc. etc. etc. NONE of his players can make it off the field without a personal or group lashing!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Gotta wonder why anyone would want to play for him.***
