I had a great time in Syracuse!

Sep 16, 2019, 6:49 PM

My trip to Syracuse was terrific. This was the second time I've gone up to the Dome to watch us play and since we won, this trip was much better than the last. I'll go back in a couple of years for more than a few reasons.

1. Upper State NY offered a delightful climatic change of season for me. The mid-day weather was perfect and it was delightfully cool. I noted immediately the leaves on the trees were beginning to change colors and things seemed to be a full month more into fall than the hot and humid late summer we've been having at home.

2. I drove around a bit and loved the gorgeous small family farms that dot the country side. It seemed like a dairy herd was was around every bend in the road and barns and silos were well maintained. There also seemed to be a big beautiful lake ever 2 or 3 miles.

3. We parked in the same tailgating lot as we did 2 years ago and the people were uniformly welcoming, offering us Philly CheeseSteaks, several varieties of cold beer and some nice stronger stuff too. I saw and photographed a POOL TABLE with a big Syracuse S on the cloth set up in the tailgate area by some guys who were going to drink a few beers and play a lot of pool until game time. A pool table as a tailgate accessory was a first for me. We also met Syracuse graduates who live in Charlotte and had driven up for the game, which was pretty unexpected. In the game we sat next to a young couple from SC who where Syracuse natives who had also driven up to see the game

4. We spent most of the late afternoon in Fagans, a bar/restaurant near campus that was full early and late with fans from both schools drinking a beer or three and almost being able to watch the Bama/SC game on the tube.

5. It was homecoming for 'Cuse and they had set up several big tents in the quad. The place was full of people, the band that was playing was pretty good and the food offered for sale was good. Again there were TVs set up inside the big circus sized tents to watch games on as the evening fell and game time approached.

6. We had upper deck seats in the corners up high, but the sightlines were terrific and I always felt like I had a good view of the action due to the small size of the arena. We sat in front of a group of 40-50 year old men who drank a lot of beer, left a big mess of cans behind them and we never heard any particularly discouraging talk, profanity or unsportsmanlike anything from them. This experience duplicated what I recall from the game we lost 2 years ago.

7. ((I don't like indoor domed stadiums. The acoustics were terrible, I never really understood anything the PA announcer had to say, and the scoreboard, time clock, down and distance indicators were inadequate.)) But hey, we won the game, the 'Cuse fans never got the least bit ugly and we left to congratulations from departing fans.

The entire gameday experience was very good.

8. On Sunday we drove to Cooperstown, fell in love with the whole town and beautiful lake and terrace at the Otesaga Resort where the food at the Hawkeye Bar and Grill was spectacular. It looks like a wonderplace to play a round of golf. The Baseball Hall of Fame was terrific. It took me back decades to names my father and grandfather revered. All the baseball legends of my life were there, seeming alive and well in memory and immortalized in the shrine to our national sport. I cannot emphasize enough how perfect Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame was. Next time I go to the game up there I might stay in Cooperstown. Oh, and when we were leaving Cooperstown I stopped for gas. As I got out to pump the gas a fellow walked up and said it was full service! He started pumping gas and said he was from South Carolina. I asked where and he said "Pendleton"! Turned out he'd gone to high school with Ricky Lee Jones, a Clemson BB player in the 80s.

9. Other members of our group left Syracuse and went to Niagara Falls and reportedly had a great time.

I've heard from others who did not enjoy their visit to Syracuse. I am perplexed by that. In two visits over the last 3 years, I've had a blast of there and felt truly welcomed both times.

If you have never made the trip to Syracuse, I urge you to put it on your list, go with an open mind, and I would expect you to have as good a time as I did.

sounds like a great trip. when we went in 2013 we visited Toronto and Niagara Falls and missed Cooperstown. Went apple picking on Sunday after the game at Beak & Skiff.

It does me good to hear that you enjoyed your trip Harley! I too thoroughly enjoyed my trip up from NJ. The weather cooperated, I met Dwight Freeney & Coach Boeheim at the tailgate, had a beer with Trevor Lawrence’s bro at Faegan’s before the game, took a pic with Otto, and got a high-five from Isaiah Simmons after the win! Heck, I even ate next to Xavier Thomas’ father Ezra after midnight at Denny’s. Good times.

I couldn’t believe how many Clemson folks were at Faegan’s! We took that place over for sure (some of the students weren’t too thrilled about this as Faegan’s is the staple hangout for seniors)! And by the 3rd quarter, it was like Clemson home game in the dome. I was surprised to only get heckled by a few and got far more congratulations than I did grief from anyone.

Go Tigers! On to Charlotte...

I rarely ever have a bad time whenever I go see Clemson play in away games. People are always nice and offering food or assistance. Same goes for Clemson to me you make of it what you will. If you go in there with a bad attitude or say everything acting like a jerk then you will receive the same. If you go in there with a good attitude then you will receive the same on most occasions. I have been to FSU, GT, UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, NCST, and USC. None were terrible but the worst was usc but still had a good time and even got invited to go inside a Cockabuse. Some of the fans outside the stadium were not as nice but heck it is our in-state rival.

I’ve seen some nasty stuff happen at NCSU years ago (mid 80’s). I’ve never gone back. I expect that stuff at South Carolina, but I’ve actually had fun there as I usually tailgate with friends that are South Carolina supporters and the ribbing is pretty good natured. Never been to Maryland, but heard some bad stories about that place as well. I think the rest of the ACC is pretty tame.

Maryland was the worst, followed by UGA, NCSU, and SC. I never had any problems elsewhere.

that hate on our opponents, their fans, town, etc.

I have said for years that the ACC affords us some amazing road trips. You just described Syracuse, with good fans, good weather, beautiful scenery and great attractions like Niagara and Cooperstown. Then there are great towns like Boston, Miami, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. Beautiful campuses like UVA and Wake. And to round it out, a slew of easily drivable road games.

Someone is going to read the above and feel the need to say “you had me until _____...what a dump.” And that’s fine. As another poster said, your mileage may vary and you get out of it what you put into it for the most part. But there aren’t a lot of conferences that can offer the varied options of accessibility or great road trips (beyond the game itself).

Agreed. I have enjoyed so many road trips throughout the years--experiences I will never forget. Really miss playing UVA as it was one of the best places to visit with so many side trips available.

I went to hs with his wide receiver. Ken was a good qb but I don't know if you know what happened to him after he graduated.

He was indicted but I don't believe he ever went to jail

Funny comments while in Syracuse....

Sep 17, 2019, 7:25 AM

I met a Clemson guy in our hotel lobby who asked if this was the first away game I had been to this year. I told him yep and reminded him that this was in fact the first road game this year. He said it was hard for him to keep track because he doesn't go to Clemson home games because the traffic is too bad. He then said he lives in Anderson and had driven up to Syracuse.

On the way into the Dome a talkative Syracuse fan enjoyed telling us about the dome, about how hot it was going to be and that the crowd was going to be huge. He said they expected 50,000 fans for the game. Then said, seriously, "Do you guys get 50,000 for a game at Clemson?"

big time crowd, the campus shots were beautiful before sunset, and even more beautiful, with the lights after sunset. A couple of the human interest stories were really moving and showed the pride and dignity of that program. The 103-year old man that had just passed away and had been such a great person for Syracuse was the focus of an inspiring and moving story. The Tim Green ceremony was also very moving. The award for the tv announcer, a Syracuse graduate, was great. Let's face it, they are the standard for broadcasting schools. Their domination of the field speaks for itself.

I wonder how far it is from Watkins Glen? I donate to a sanctuary farm there. I look at the farm pastures on the webcams and the countryside in Watkins Glen looks beautiful.

Watkins Glenn is an hour or so from Syracuse. It is very pretty down there and when the leaves change it is spectacular. Most people think SU is a basketball school. It isn't. Just that our football program has been sleeping for the better part of 20 years. All programs go through that. Michigan, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Miami and even Clemson. We will be back. Way to much tradition to keep us down for that. I should know, I am in my 56th season of attending these games. Good luck this year and win it all. You have a great program and a classy coach.

I have had a bad experience at Cuse mainly by some drunk Cuse fans who didn't like me cheering on the Tigers. Usher did absolutely nothing.

No problems this year except for woman screamer that sat next to me. I am very happy we won.

Driving to Cuse is beautiful later this month and October because the foilage is fantastic as it is in Cooperstown.

Upstate is BEAUTIFUL this time of year. The weather really is near perfect from mid-May through October. Beautiful, sunny days with cool nights. Many of the homes do not have A/C, it is only humid for a couple weeks out of the year.

Winter, now that is a different story ;)
