Than “he/she got out too far over their skis”?
Let’s mix it up a little....maybe “He got stuck with the short polo mallet” or “His yacht is short a bow thruster”

While we are on expressions, why do they call it "Black Friday"? I have no idea where that came from.

Ultimately in a nod to greater spirituality, they named the album Black Sunday.
Greedy capitalists wanting to ride B-Real’s jock, stole the name for their store sales.

is this attributable to snow skiing or water skiing or both?

aren't you supposed to be over your skis (as opposed to under them, or off to the side of them).
So what does that expression even mean? Bad or good?

I don’t think I ever heard it before the 2010-2015 timeframe.
Maybe it is old though, because with old ski boots/bindings, you did take more of a neutral stance, but in the modern shaped ski era you’re supposed to be putting weight forward and driving your boot frontwards.
Water skis? Too far forward has always been ugly.

One usage meant they got ahead of themselves, and the other was that they got too big for their britches.

Street and see a guy with 2 weeks worth of beard, wild hair, and sweatpants and a WWF tank top lying on a stained mattress in their yard, my first thought isn’t to say “Man, looks like you got out a little far over your skis!”
