Is Saban really that good of a coach?

Feb 6, 2014, 6:51 PM

To me what make a coach good is his ability to take what he has and make it better. I don't see how you could make the argument that Saban has done that. Alabama has had the undisputed #1 recruiting class for 3 straight years and they have been very close (or at) the top for several years before that. No other team comes close to Alabama's recruiting record. If you take the rest of the top 5 in the recruiting rankings this year, for example, not one of them was in the top 5 last year. I think what can be said about Saban is that he has dominated the rest of the country in recruiting, but with that kind of talent it doesn't take a great coach to win two out the last four championships. I'm not saying that record makes him a bad coach, but given that starting point I would expect about the same record out of any major Division I (FBS) coach.

Look at what he did at Michigan State

Feb 6, 2014, 7:04 PM

The guy wins pretty much wherever he has gone.

He did a very good job at Michigan Sate where most kids in that area flock to Ohio State and Michigan.

He then went to LSU and turned that around.

Then he did the same thing at Alabama.

Guy is a great coach and a great recruiter.

4 National championships, one @LSU three @Bama. Best recruiter in the nation every year. Puts more players into the NFL than any other current coach. It did take him four years to build MSU into a great team, but that was a complete overhaul job and he got them to 9-2 before taking the LSU job. Both LSU and Bama were in the crapper when he took those jobs. There is no question whether this guy is a great coach.
