Is OL depth really the problem?

Jun 29, 2015, 1:52 PM

Or is ot OL development...? It seems like going into every year since Bowden that our OL is considered our weakest unit. Thoughts?

We haven't had many elite Oline recruits

Jun 29, 2015, 2:26 PM

this trend is only now starting to change

totally agree with you

I have personally said for 20 years, the reason Clemson could not get over the hump.
Was because the lack of talent at OL.....I think they finally "get it".

So yea, I agree with ya.

Considering the low recruiting "stars" of our OL...

Jun 29, 2015, 2:33 PM

...I'd argue the coaching is pretty good.

Now that talent is stepping up...you may want to worry more about how your DL will do against us in the near future.

I mean, it's not like we have a former SEC HC as our OL coach or anything...your gamecocks ever lose to him?

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

What a moron

Not SINCE Bowden.
Bowden's was the same way. The O-line is in better shape now than it ever was under Bowden.

Experienced Depth is the only Issue

Jun 29, 2015, 3:09 PM

Granted, there are times when the OL makes mistakes; however, most of the time people complain about the OL because they don't know anything.

Assuming someone can block a defender indefinitely, or the 5 OL can block a stacked box, is absurd. A great back can make a good OL look great and the opposite is true.

For Clemson, it is about experience this year. Clemson has been improving at the OL position with recruiting, but there hasn't been a bunch of 4 & 5 stars in the two deep. Look at WR, there are 4 & 5 star guys at third string.

Clemson's OL wasn't a weakness last year and I don't expect it to be next year either.

OL doesn't have anywhere near as many 4/5* as skills...

Jun 29, 2015, 10:30 PM

or DLs , for that matter. We have a couple of RS freshmen that I think are going to show more than some expect....

The 2 true freshman tackles will play this year and will surprise people!
Mitch and Jake are both 6ft 6 and will be 285 to 290 for the season.
They both were Army All Americans and will step up and I believe will actually end up starting together at some point. Mitch played against great competition in HS, and so did Jake keeping Bryon Cowart (#1 player in Nation- AUBURN) to one tackle.

I think the real problem is the depth at the tackle position. (Gore/Hyatt/ Fruhmorgen)
We have many bodies for the inside, guard/ center, Maverick, Eric, Justin, Hearns, etc..
The problem is that they are not long and lack foot speed for corner rush ends.

We need to recruit some true tackles... BAD

Just my take - but the last group of OL seniors won 42 games

Jun 29, 2015, 7:33 PM

I will grant the OL may not have been elite - meaning top 20. Considering all factors of OL performance including pass blocking, I think they would rate in top 40.

I think they have been far from crappy as some folks insist.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

excellent point.....there may not have been

Jun 29, 2015, 10:16 PM

any Bostic Bros., but they did OK, especially in bowl games when they had time to prepare

And it sounds like some RS freshmen are going to get a lot of snaps this year and should be a
thoroughly dominant squad in a couple of years.
