Is Clemson to the SEC at all possible?

Nov 25, 2012, 7:53 PM

If at some stage the SEC did on the whole, want to approach us for an invite (along with FSU too), would it even be possible for SC and FL's "veto" power to be overcome by the rest of the conference? I know they have that power, and I assume the situations between Vandy/Tenn, MSU/Ole Miss, and Aub/Bama are "grandfathered" in. But, just like so many contract elements and affiliation seem to be up for renegotiation during all this shuffling, would it be possible for the rest of the SEC to vote to overturn the veto power that UF and SC have? Or is that a complete pipe dream? And I'm not even talking their desire to expand or for Clemson and FSU in particular, but just the viability of the the invite IF, hypothetically, they did have interest.

won't happen. SEC wants TV sets. FSU and GT is more likely***

The SEC is looking at and will copy the Big 10 funding model. This means that the Cable TV (Dish etc) distributors pay 10-15 X more for rights fees for subscribers in the 'footprint' of the conference. This generally means they will expand into new markets (NC, Va, In, OK etc) not established ones.

The only problem with that line of thinking is, the SEC is already shoved down our throats by ESPN and CBS. They are already on TV in NC and VA. To expand their market they would have to go to California or Hawaii.

They will be starting their own cable TV channel, and the amount they get paid is based on the number of subscribers. As an example some reports indicate that adding a team in NC and VA will add about 7-9 million per month to the conference.

This is why the big 10 added Maryland and Rutgers, cable subscribers, and the money they represent.

its just what I have been seeing in the trade publications. The Big 10 Chanel get 5-10 cents per household in states without a big 10 team, but 1-2 dollars per household in states where a big 10 team is located.

So, if you are looking at this business model, and everything I see indicates the SEC is, the incentive to add teams in states that do not currently have an SEC team.

The potential revenue is astounding, 15-20 dollars per year from every cable TV or direct TV household in the states that have SEC teams, hundreds of millions of dollars a year. This is the money that the Big 10 is looking at and why the SEC is focused on adding states with larger populations... each house is worth 20 bucks a year.

appeal than Clemson and FSU, but I guess it must be true.

Clemson in the SEC is possible, but I don't see it happening soon.

they do not have more appeal. they have more tv sets that the conference doesnt already have. except for a possibly a small portion of western nc the sec already has all the sets that clemson would bring to a cable company.

You forgot about the "gentlemen's agreement" in which UF,

Nov 25, 2012, 8:52 PM

USC, UGA and Kentucky have agreed to veto the other's in-state rival.

The SEC will start its own network. That requires going into new markets, outside their current geographic footprint. That's what the Big 10 just did.

If you want a new conference, the Big 12 is our best bet.

When the SEC goes to 16, it will be either UNC/NCST and UVA/VT.
