Insanity at the baseball field

Apr 16, 2018, 11:46 AM

The situation:
Coach's pitch (7-8 years old)
They play 6 innings.
Son of's team is batting last.

Son's team is down by 1 in the bottom of the last inning.

Zero outs.

Runner on 3rd and 2nd.

Stud hitter up to bat.

***Feeling pretty good about getting the "W" at this point.***

Hitter flies out to 3rd base. (OUT 1)

Runner on 3rd doesn't wait to tag up and takes off towards home. (oh crap)

Runner on 2nd tags up, and heads towards 3rd. (interesting decision...)

3rd baseman steps on 3rd base before the runner on 3rd has time to tag up. (OUT 2)

Runner on 3rd tags up, and head back home. (doesn't realize he is out)

Runner from 2nd passes the runner on 3rd headed home and is called out for passing a runner. ("questionable" OUT 3 since the "runner" from 3rd is already out)

TMZ-worthy argument from our coach with parents/umpires/other coaches. I can't even explain how crazy this was. It's not that difficult to see how, with all of the screaming from coaches and parents that the two high school aged umpires might miss this call...

Our coach starts screaming at our players on 2nd and 3rd, throws his glove from 3rd base over the 1st base dugout (towards the parents). Coach's ex tells him to chill the F out. He throws a batting helmet at her (hits the fence right in front of her and the other parents) and tells her to GTFO.

We end up losing by 1. Kids (not Son of) are crying... like screaming and hysterical crying, coach is yelling at kids, parents are yelling at coach, my son is trying to comfort his teammates by telling them that it's okay. Wife and I are speechless.

NO follow up email or apology from our coach. He did, however, ask for video footage from the game so he can contest it. I mean, he's right, the runner from 2nd shouldn't have been out. He did actually cross home plate, which tied the game, leaving us with a tied game, 2 outs, and no men on base. At this point, though, who gives a crap. This is freaking coach's pitch baseball. I'm competitive as anybody (and somewhat of an a-hole), but I don't hold a candle to this dude.

Re: Man, I'm no helicopter parent or anything.........

Apr 16, 2018, 11:57 AM [ in reply to Man, I'm no helicopter parent or anything......... ]

I'm with you on this one.

I haven't made a decision yet and I have some time, since son will be out for a week from his surgery today.

I'll check with the other parents and see how practice goes this week. If nothing has changed, then we'll probably just bow out.

Son is pretty unflappable. He didn't seem to bothered by the whole ordeal (like he wasn't bothered at all). I don't want him to think quitting is okay, but I also don't want to see him put up with that jackassery at such a young age (he just turned 7).

The two assistant coaches are really good guys, very knowledgeable about baseball, good with the kids, and CALM. I wish they would take over and send this guy home.

Here's another thing that aggravates me.

Son is one of the weaker players on the team. I know that. He doesn't always listen. I know that as well. I don't expect him to be playing in the infield or even playing a whole lot during the game. During our 7 games this year, son of has played 2 innings in 5 games and only 1 inning in the other 2. 9 of the 13 players have never set a single inning this season. The other 4 players are splitting the last few innings. During the practices, they do some quick throwing/catching and batting drills, and then the last hour, the 4 players that never play are used as base running dummies for the other 9 to practice their fielding.

You know, after typing that out, I think I've made up my mind that we're done playing for that guy. It's ridiculous. Thanks for letting me vent. This has been helpful.

Apr 16, 2018, 12:00 PM

Assuming this isn't one of those vicarious travel team leagues, that's nuts that he's riding the pine that much.

Up until middle school, the rule for rec league is that you generally try to get equal playing time. It was actually one of the worst parts of coaching in leagues like that, trying to figure out how to get Jimmy grasspicker his playing time, but that was the gig.

Apr 16, 2018, 12:29 PM

There ARE playing time minimums at every level that the coach should be held responsible to satisfy. Honestly...coach pitch ball should be completely instructional and playing time should be equal. At least, that is how I did it. Sounds like your coach is more worried about putting a trophy on his mantle than developing kids. There's at least one in every league, every season.

Further, I practiced my weaker players harder than the starters, and it always paid off come tournament time. I'd say your coach may know baseball, but doesn't know jack about coaching kids up. Can't tell you how many times a kid that couldn't identify a baseball on day 1 came through and made a play or got a hit for our team at the end of the season when it mattered.

So, same now as it was in my day.

Apr 16, 2018, 2:26 PM [ in reply to The minium is ]

I did far better than giving kids the minimum, but again, I always worked on coaching our weakest kids up. The other thing I always did was train ever kid at an outfield AND infield position. Unless I thought a kid was going to get themselves killed playing infield, they all got to play the position they cross-trained for in a game. This was another move that almost always paid dividends at the end of the season.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, it drives me insane.

Apr 16, 2018, 2:39 PM

I'm not able to coach this season bc of work. Our coach is a nice guy, but very low baseball IQ. We've got the youngest team in the league and are taking weekly curb stompings, but he has his positions set. Doesn't move kids around at all. That's frustrating to me, especially considering none of them are overly good at any position, much less just the one.

But... As I used to tell people.. If you don't like it, the form goes out every year, sign on up..

I wouldn't deal well with the yelling at the kids crap though, I'd say something about it.

Apr 16, 2018, 12:05 PM [ in reply to Re: Man, I'm no helicopter parent or anything......... ]

My son is by far the worst on his 6-8yo coaches pitch team. He bats 12th, but still plays 2-3 innings EVERY game. They try to line up his field time with the bottom of the other team's order, and stuff him in right or left field. Then have the best outfielder shade his way for backup.

We have great and supportive coaches. Head coach is very active in church youth groups and it really shows. Kids on team are pretty great too, but I've caught one calling my son 'the kid who never gets a hit'. Parents have been pretty supportive but understand my kid is currently an automatic out (did get close with a few foul balls).

Our boy loves playing baseball though. Puts on the uniform and I swear it's his superhero costume. The look on his face after he hit a solid foul ball and sprinted to first base was priceless. Can't wait for that first hit (even if it only rolls 1 ft in front of plate).

Apr 16, 2018, 12:01 PM

Coaches pitch (Age 6-8). Some drunk idiot relative from other team hugged the fence on our side, and proceeded to heckle our first baseman, pitcher and right field.

I confronted him and not so delicately escorted him back to his side of bleachers. Guy trying to explain that it will toughen up our players, they need to get used to this, and it's Americas pasttime where fans are allowed to yell at players.

Apr 16, 2018, 12:11 PM

Coach Pitch (6-8)
The yelling at the kids is just nuts for this age. Twice already this year kids on the other teams would not come to bat, they were crying too hard.
Only three teams in our league, thankfully I help coach our team, we don't yell at them. Surprise surprise, we have the best team, and our kids know what to do in most situations. And if not, we get them in dugout and teach them the right way to do things.

Funniest thing to me, the coaches that yell the most have no idea about baseball whatsoever.
I grew up in Atlanta, played LL at Murphy Candler, and my LL coach actually pitched for the New York Mets. When he said something, we listened.

This is the truth.

We are 7-2 right now. Both losses were to the undefeated teams by 1 run. So I get it.. we're "good".

The coach that we played with for t-ball went to HS with me and pitched at USC, under Tanner. He was on both of their championship teams. Besides the coot stuff, he's a great coach for these kids. Soft spoken, has a very great understanding of the game, as well as how to teach kids. His own kids are just so-so. He is coaching coach's pitch this year and his team is 2-5, but he lets all kids play equally and even let's the usual "outfielders" get some infield play from time to time. During registration, we requested him, but it didn't work out.

This guy actually is coaching a t-ball AND a coaches pitch team this season (he has 4 boys).

Apr 16, 2018, 12:26 PM

The yelling screaming other coaches never played over SCISA high school baseball, which is a joke.
Son's coach is a former Citadel player, and a starter. Another coach in the league pitched for College of Charleston, and is a nice guy as well.
We lead the league but have two losses. In one loss, in the last inning in a tied game, our coach put all our outfielders in the infield, and our infielders in the outfield. It cost us the game, but the smiles on our kids faces after the game was priceless. So excited. The kid we put at catcher, who has sulked the entire year, hasn't stopped talking about it since.

Son played T-ball (fall and spring) from ages 3-6.

Last fall we played Upward flag football (do no recommend).

This spring we are doing coaches pitch (he turned 7 mid season).

The county basketball starts at 8 around here, and we will definitely be doing that. I was a baller back in the day and son's uncle (bro in law) is 7' tall.

We didn't mess with soccer because I don't understand it at all.

We may hold off on football until he is old enough to play the county league.

That's going to open the door for everything from my kid isn't a full time starter, my kid should be batting lead off, or coach won't let my kid pitch. In this particular case, it wasn't an action pointed at one particular kid.

So if I'm hearing you correctly............

you're saying plant an "intent to distribute" quantity of cocaine in the coach's trans-am, and then place an anonymous phone call to the local Sheriff?

Since most people don't have access to the right people for wet work and post-operative clean-up, I mean.

On an unrelated note, I bet my pigs would go buck-wild on 200lbs of raw meat.

Much more serious answer:

Did you or anyone bring this up with the league officials?

If the coach or anyone else was dropping F bombs in our rec league, they would be suspended for at least the rest of the season and probably the next season as well.

Don't ask me how I know...

Your quitting without making an effort to let the people in charge know what is happening isn't helping anyone.

This is NOT acceptable. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s pulled by the league. I’d pull my kid and approach the league about joining a more constructive team.
