In Honor of Hammering Hank . . .

Apr 9, 2020, 6:00 PM

(Inspired by Tiger Contractor's earlier post!)

Does anyone remember what the Homerun Derby used to be like???

Here's one episode . . . Hank vs Al Kaline . . . (Al was my Dad's favorite player!)

https://youtu.be/bvP5SII1zwU

I didn't realize Al hit with a space between his hands . . .

Both guys have a lunging stride, with their weight going heavy on their front foot . . . Today's power hitter's swing seems to have more weight back, creating their power from hip rotation . . . I was a slasher . . . What do I know?!!!!

Watch to the end to see how little they played for . . .

Kaline never played in the minors. Went straight from HS to MLB

Heard on the tape that he had a $35K Signing Bonus

Al played 22 seasons . . . He was an 18X All-Star . . . and . . . He won 10 Golden Glove Awards

In his 22 years he earned ~$1,500,000 . . . about $70,000 per season

My how times have changed!!!

Thanks Skeet. They must have replayed these because I remember them in the mid to late 60's. Wow, talk a out a walk back in time... Our dad took us over a couple times on our family vacations. Absolutely awestruck. Ghesh!!!!!

Thanks

Hank couldn’t hold a candle to the true home run king and that is the babe

You might very well be right . . .

Different era . . . different guys . . . I can't compare them . . . I never saw the Sultan play . . . wish I had!!!

I did see Hank many times . . . He was as pure a player as I've ever seen.

Babe's stats are great:
