I’m considering solar panels on the roof. I’m not sure about

Jul 18, 2020, 5:07 PM

the economics on it. Anyone that’s had it recently, tell me about the tax deductions and savings. Seems to me battery storage is probably the biggest issue that I see

. I’m asking this b/c I want to do this but there are a lot of solar pimps out there that will tell you what you want to hear and not what you need to know. Any help from someone that’s done this. Let me know.

Apparently one of the laws around solar panels is

You have to wear Birkenstock’s and drive a Subaru. Too much for me personally.

Batteries don’t really enter into it unless you want to go

completely off grid and they usually drive the price up too much if you are already connected.

Look and see if your utility offers community solar to get your feet wet.

A peak credit on your power bill is how most folks are going.

The tariffs and loss of incentives since the last election have made it not nearly so attractive as it was a few years ago.

Use this site to see if it will even work for your house.

Get references for any company you go with because there are a lot of schysters out there.

If you are in their service area, I recommend Southern Current.

And yes metiger has more recent experience than I do.

Well, I got this answer

Jul 18, 2020, 7:16 PM

Analysis complete. Your roof has:
1,459 hours of usable sunlight per year
Based on day-to-day analysis of weather patterns
2,079 sq feet available for solar panels
Based on 3D modeling of your roof and nearby trees
$9,000 savings
Estimated net savings for your roof over 20 years

Have you considered wind energy?

Jul 18, 2020, 9:16 PM

Windmills are a happening thing around these Jounge parts.
Just ask Chris Finnegan
I used to have his phone number, but the gods of TN took it away from me.

I’d also link to Travis, but he’s kinda testy at times.
Who am I kidding? He’s downright ornery.

I've been thinking about solar panels as well.

But I'll put mine in the crawlspace under the house instead of on the roof so as not to detract from the beauty of my home's illustrious architecture.

The loan negates the savings on power bill.

Jul 19, 2020, 3:38 PM

Unless, of course, you pay in full up front. Here is what they do:

- Give you a loan to pay for the installation of panels.

- put a lean on your house for the amount of the loan. the loan will keep the payment and your minimal power bill about the same as you were paying for power from power company.

- You still pay a minimal power bill - you will stay connected to the power company

- you will get a credit from power company for energy pushed out from your house to them

- charge you a arm and a leg for battery storage system

- get a tax credit from Gov't. this is going down and/or about to end

- here in my neck of the woods it takes 6-8 months before solar power can be used. Power company must approve all connections. You are on their time.
