Obed, since you're here...SUV advice needed

Jul 16, 2019, 1:11 PM

I've been looking at small SUV's, found a nice off lease, low mileage 2015 Benz GLK 350. Seriously considering pulling the trigger tomorrow, am I crazy? I simply cannot find any Lexii for a decent deal that don't smell like cigarette smoke or curry.

How much is this thing going to rape me on repairs?

I can only speak for Mercedes***

Wow, lucky you, there is a gentlemen on the TNET Jounge

Jul 16, 2019, 1:17 PM

that has been fixing his Mercedes for what seems like 7.6 years. Apparently, if you like repairs and refinishing the wood trim, you will LOVE this car. I have no actual knowledge of this car but I do go to church with a girl who drives one.

I'll burn it to the ground and collect insurance just like

Jul 16, 2019, 1:19 PM

my granddaddy used to do before I go through all that trouble. I figure anything under 50k miles has a while before it starts falling apart. In my experience with BMW's, 100k miles is where they start getting finicky.

Word of advice on any Benz or German manufactured car

Jul 16, 2019, 4:35 PM

If you can’t afford to buy a new one you definitely can’t afford a used one. I’ve found Mercedes start failing around 80k miles.

MB has a brilliant marketing plan. 100k for a new one and 50k in maintenance every 100k miles

For relaxing times, make it Suntory time

Not terrible, but wouldn't be my first choice.

Jul 16, 2019, 1:24 PM

In a SUV/Crossover that size (that my wife would be driving), I'd prefer

-Mazda CX5 (seriously---look for a 2017/18---they're hella nice)
-2016 Volvo XC60
-2015-16 Audi Q5

They're more modern designs, more comfortable, get better gas mileage, and if I'm buying anything built in the last 5 years, it'd better have Apple Car Play, which the MB doesn't (easy retrofit to the Audi).

Of the lot, the Mazda would be the most trouble-free ownership experience. It wouldn't be the fastest, but it would easily be the most enjoyable to drive, ride and handling wise.

Ugh, I've been begging her to give the CX-5 a shot

Jul 16, 2019, 1:33 PM

She says the front end looks like it got discount lip injections in Tijuana.

Haven't looked at the XC60's yet, did look at a few of the new XC90's and really like them. Looks like there's a couple of fairly low mileage 60's in Greenville, I'll have to check those out first.

I don't know that our last experience with VW will allow us to give Audi an honest shot. This will be something that gets driven maybe 10-12k miles a year, I've just heard some mixed reviews on later model Mercedes these days.

She's going to have a hard time going from a full size SUV

Jul 16, 2019, 4:33 PM

to something smaller. I know I would.

You are crazy.

Get an Acura or Mazda.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Acura RDX you have to get a 2019 to get away from that

Jul 16, 2019, 1:37 PM

uglyass front beak design and if you get a 2019 you get the turbo four that's having major oil usage issues that Honda is trying to sweep under the rug.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looked at Acura's, really like the MDX

Jul 16, 2019, 1:38 PM [ in reply to Re: Obed, since you're here...SUV advice needed ]

The RDX interior is pretty meh, and all of the comparible Acura's with similar mileage I've found would be ~$5-7k more than I could get this GLK for. Added bonus would be able to act all snooty like Greenville people.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I got a loaner GLA 250 the other day for a couple days

Jul 16, 2019, 1:40 PM

I couldn't have felt gayer giving Richard Simmons a nude piggy back ride while rollerblading down the swamp rabbit trail, and the driving experience sucked soooo badly.

Horrible, horrible car.

Ms Wilbur has the MDX. Been a good car.

Jul 16, 2019, 1:42 PM [ in reply to Looked at Acura's, really like the MDX ]

Got 207K miles on it and it keeps cruising along.

Guy at HALT said we could easily add another 100K miles to it.

Our problem with those is, if we're going to spend that

Jul 16, 2019, 1:45 PM

much on a used car, it's not that much more money just to go ahead with a Lexus GX460. Which is apparently is the holy grail of SUV's to my wife. Aside from an Escalade, of course.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-lakebum1-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They hold their value pretty good tho.

Jul 16, 2019, 1:54 PM

Ours is an '07 with 206K miles that Kelly Blue Book says has a value of around $12K.

in perfect condition with 70k miles.

Escalade is a grade A POS. This based off of 3 peeps I’ve known to own them.

I came really, really close several years ago to

Jul 16, 2019, 4:19 PM

pulling the trigger on the GLK 250 (thats the diesel version) and ultimately opted for the X1.

I did a fair amount of research on the GLK and like it a lot.
