There are alternative paths if the student has the drive and work ethic. My grades in high school were average. Commuted to Trident Technical College in North Charleston for two years and transferred with a 3.1-something GPA bringing 45-60 credits with. This was before the BRIDGE program and just after the lottery tuition assistance started. I spent maybe a grand each semester for books and tuition. That helped with cost of school big time. Graduated from Clemson with a 3.3+ GPA and a BS in civil engineering.
Frankly as an employer your story is more appealing to me than a student who whizzed through HS with great grades and went "full ride" on his/her parents.
