Will Dan Radakovich bring softball to Clemson?
Mar 8, 2013, 9:03 AM
|

Do you think Radakovich will even consider bringing womens softball to Clemson?
He is right out of the gate talking about Littlejohn being torn down and replacing it with a more modern arena (or at least exploring that option of replacing Littlejohn). My question is why not spend some of that money and create a softball program?
We are 1 of 4 ACC (current) schools who do not have womens softball.

I hope not we have enough leech programs draining the AD without adding another.

I don't understand how our Olympic sports are so sad.
Granted Men's Basketball has had a down year and Women's Basketball has been awful for a while (hence the firing of Coleman) but every other sport I see significant improvement on the horizon.
Men's and Women's Tennis are both at the top of the ACC standings now, Women's Volleyball had over 20 wins and finished in the top 5 of the ACC, Men's Soccer is moving in the right direction under Noonan and finished in the top 4 of the conference, Women's Soccer is in the midst of a significant rebuilding effort but Radwanksi had UNC Greensboro consistently in the NCAA tournament during his tenure there and is turning things around, Women's Track has won 4 straight ACC titles, Men's Track finished 3rd in the indoor meet despite having an interim coach, Men's Golf is one of the more consistent programs on campus, Women's Golf will be a winning program with the pipeline of talented golfers in the area, and Baseball will only get better with the talent LeCroy is bringing in.
Admittedly I don't know much about Rowing, Diving or Cross Country but it seems like we're doing a little better than people give us credit for with our Olympic sports.

womens bb, almost dead last every yr. mens tennis has been horrible for 10+ yrs now. They got better this yr finally but still not even top 25. womens tennis - been decent over the yrs. mens track - we went from a top 5 program to a top 4-7 in acc. soccer - we have just been horrible. Noonan hasn't done jack. golf - for some reason has gone downhill. Still better than 95% of our other teams tho but not a top 10 team anymore. volleyball - not bad, not good, just avg rowing- they are actually good womens track - our best program by far. baseball - its been sad where this is headed. mens bb - gettting worse every yr since OP.
the only teams that are doing anything is football and womens track and maybe rowing.
if our teams aren't close to competing for an ACC championship yr in and yr out, then yes, this is pretty bad imo. I'm not even talking winning, just competing. You could probably only put football, w track and rowing in that category. Golf is a funny game but we haven't been close to winning the ACC in a while.

What's the solution to fix this sad state of affairs?
Brownell is in his third year with a young team, Noonan has been here for three years and has been turning things around to the point of finishing 4th in the ACC last fall, Radwanski just finished his second year, we have an interim track coach, we just signed a top 5 recruiting class in baseball, and Larry Penley is the best coach we have in any sport.
Do we fire everybody and start over?
I see improvement across the board so I don't see how everything is so bleak.

Penley should never be fired

hopefully Leggett is on borrowed time. I also forgot the worst, womens soccer. needs to be fired.
Noonan's record is a losing record and again this yr. He probably gets 1 more yr.
We just need to fix both soccers, w basketball and hire a stud track coach. Not sure if they keep the temp coach
Legget probably has 2 more yrs imo.

agree about Leggett, it's kind of like the Bobby Bowden situation at FSU, they've just gotten stale.
How can you say the women's soccer coach needs to be fired going into his 2nd season when he just signed a recruiting class headlined by the goalkeeper for the U-17 national team?
Men's soccer moved from 9th in conference 4 years ago to 5th this year, Noonan is seeing steady if slow improvement.
Obviously there are women's basketball changes coming, you can't recruit that well and lose that many games/lose that many players to transfers.

It is the only other team in the conference not named "Virginia" that has won an ACC title (a few years ago). They have placed second every year they didn't win it since Robbie took over.

I think it would be great to have a softball team and even lacrosse (if we are ACC then we should have lacrosse IMHO).
But we've cut swimming and there would probably be more cuts before we add anything. I assume extra monies are all going to football and hoop improvements.

not have a women's softball team. Too many girls playing travel ball to not be able to field a decent competitive team from the start. Rowing...c'mon man!...the only rowing our girls have done is when their Daddy let them paddle around the pond while bass fishing.

Not taking into account the 50 schollies
Mar 8, 2013, 12:33 PM
[ in reply to It's too expensive ] |

It's more cost effective than building a softball field for a much smaller number of schollies, then adding another sport.
The AD does all kinds of weighing of financials for stuff like this, it wasn't done just for the hell of it.
Source: I was a board member on the club team that had to pay its own bills with little aid from the university.

No one is arguing whether softball or rowing costs more...

the argument is that at a southern school there should be a softball team. You'll get a heck of a lot more people at a softball game than at a rowing competition. You won't make money with either but you’ll make a lot of Clemson girls and parents happy. Just about every college in SC has a softball team except Clemson. Clemson took the cheap way out with rowing.

doesn't produce a lot of DI level talent in softball yet. Compared to other states we got into fast pitch softball late.
It's better than it was 10 years ago, but we still aren't producing enough talent year in and year out as a state to support another DI softball program.

for recognizing that a new HC was needed immediately for women's basketball. It was inevitable with the player situation, coaching, win/loss record, etc. Contrary to some beliefs...Coach Brad B. is a quality coach and deserves time to develop the men's team. Next year will be tough but think they will play with more cohesion and perhaps have a better record. GOOOO Tigers!
